Description

Laboratory assignments will be completed as TYPED reports with the following sections:

1. Project (location, description, participants)

2. Project Conditions (project status, weather, on day visited)

3. Answers to specific questions for the lab

4. Summary and conclusions

The lab report can be as long as needed in order to complete the assignment. Professional

work is expected. Use a table of contents, figures and tables should be referenced and

have captions, and so on. You may have attachments, which should be neat, clean, and

firmly attached

Figures: Project description with photos and maps as needed, provide photos for all items

requested.

Safety toolbox: Reference OSHA section numbers, answer all questions with sufficient detail,

use appropriate figures.

2. Appearance and organization:

Professional Appearance: Typed, not congested, not much empty space, use paragraphs

Well organized/easy to find things: TOC, LOF, page numbers, section titles, items discussed in

correct order, attachments well organized.

Use of figures: Figures and tables are numbered, captioned, and referenced in the text, set in

line with text (do not wrap with text).

3. Language: Use technical writing style, short and clear sentences, use correct spelling and grammar, use

LAB 3 – STEEL FABRICATION Host: McMahon Steel Address: 1872/1880 Nirvana Ave. Chula Vista, CA 91911 on 3/2/18 Start at 2:40 PM During the third field trip we will visit the McMahon Steel Fabrication Yard where you will be learning about the steel fabrication process. During your visit, you will see structural and miscellaneous steel and embeds being fabricated, as well as the fabrication equipment used. Your report should include the standard initial sections (company description(http://mcmahonsteel.com/),project location(1872/1880 Nirvana Ave. Chula Vista, CA 91911), and conditions at the time of the field trip)( when we visited there was some steel lay down and workers were leaving, just a couple of them were working" cutting some steel and making holes in them"). In addition, complete the following activities: 1. Role of the Fabricator Find out the relationship between the owner, the architect, the structural engineer, the general contractor, the steel erector, and the steel fabricator for a typical project. What does the fabricator do in the project? Clearly define the roles and responsibility of McMahon on a typical building project. 2. Design Drawings Describe the relationship between the structural drawings and the shop drawings. Who makes each set? Provide a flow chart that describes how shop drawings are made, reviewed, and approved. Show the process when a BIM model is also developed. Be sure and indicate who is performing each step in your flow chart. Describe the bidding/estimating process for the fabrication operations. 3. Supply Chain Where does the steel that the fabricator works on come from? You should describe specific instances that you learn about during your visit, and at least two kinds of steel (e.g. structural and miscellaneous). Where did the steel come from (specifically), what kind of steel is it? How long does it take to get the steel (lead time)? As Kevin mentioned the steel come from Utah, South Korea, Europe, Canada and Chicago. I’m not sure about the kind of steel!!! How long it takes , it depends where it comes from, it goes by quarters (3 months from the outside and 6 weeks from the inside). 4. Fabrication Process • Prepare a general layout of the fabrication yard, and provide approximate dimensions. Lab 3: Steel Fabrication – Page 1 | C O N E 2 8 0 • Indicate what functions happen where on the yard, and show the typical flow for a piece of main steel. • What equipment is present – and what computerized equipment is used at this yard. Why were those actions computerized? What does it mean for them to be “computerized”? The equipment will be in pictures. • You may also observe some fabricating operations. What personnel is involved? How many workers are there, and what do they do? If there is no work in progress when we visit, ignore the last question. During regular day 60 workers in this shop, 70 in Tijuana, 10 in the office. their job is to check everything such as welds, welds size and other things that You can add. There were only couple people working on cutting steel plates and making holes in them. Detailed answers are expected. 5. Relationship to the Field What is the relationship between when fabrication begins, and when erection begins? How do they coordinate deliveries of material to the job site? Where are materials stored before they are taken to the job site, and how much steel is commonly stored at the job site? What happens if there is a change in the project – how do they get a new piece fabricated? Who pays for that? If the materials were delayed, then they stored in two Acre yards in Otay mesa. Or if it’s not delay then it’s stays in the workshop. how much steel is commonly stored at the job site(it depends on the size of the job, so if it’s a small size then they can keep it in workshop yard but if it’s a lot then they have to transfer it to Otay mesa). What happens if there is a change in the project – how do they get a new piece fabricated? Who pays for that?( f there is a change of the order then they have to pay for it, I mean whoever made the order have to pay for it. because they have to change the beams!). 6. Standards and Inspections Define the following: AWS and AISC. What do these organizations have to do with the fabricating process? Why are they important to McMahon’s operations? How do they relate to the building codes and specifications for a given project? How is quality controlled for a structural steel building project? Answer this question in regards to the fabrication shop AND to the field. What things are typically inspected, and how? How is your answer different for a private owner (like an office building) as compared to a public owner (like a school)? What about a hospital in California? SAFETY TOOLBOX Study the OSHA standards on hearing protection. What sections (with numbers) are relevant? What hearing protection standards are normally enforced at McMahon during operations? How is noise level measured?( they just know if it’s loud they wear Air blugs and if not then they don’t use them) What is the meaning of dbA as compared to db? How could you tell if a given noise level was loud enough that hearing protection is needed? Answer the question both Lab 3: Steel Fabrication – Page 2 | C O N E 2 8 0 assuming that you have a measurement device (what would that be) and assuming that you do NOT have a measurement device. FACTS: • They use Oxygen and settlement to cut the steel. Or they use Plasma . • Kevin McMahon is the second generation of the owner and his partner which is his brother is Derek McMahon. They are the owners right now. • They brought these machines from Holland Amsterdam, Italy and Domestic. • McMahon handling 18 current jobs right now. • I think he mentioned that they have a contract with Amazon • They do structural and misalliance fiber. They do frame work. • Before he took us for a little cruse, he explained to us how the process goes for the order, what’s the communication between them and the architect and the engineer. Also, the history of the company. • Website about the company http://mcmahonsteel.com/company/. Lab 3: Steel Fabrication – Page 3 | C O N E 2 8 0
