Writing

Description

Your instructor will grade your peer reviews of your classmates’ projects based on three criteria:

1) the quantity;

2) the quality; and

3) the tone of your comments.

Quantity: At minimum, you are required to compose the following: five in-text comments that address particular passages in the essay; three rubric-criteria comments (on Focus, Evidence, Organization, etc.) that address larger areas of concern; two Community Comments that point out patterns of difficulty that should be analyzed and corrected; and one substantial "Overall Comments" note that discusses the paper as a whole.

Quality: Your comments should be specific, textually grounded, accurate, and detailed. You are expected to indicate particular passages in your classmates’ essays, state what is or is not working, and provide clear suggestions for improvement. Avoid simple statements of approval or disapproval, like “this doesn’t make any sense,” "this is good," or “I liked/did not like this” unless accompanied by a “because” statement.

Tone: As with all academic writing, you are expected to maintain a tone appropriate to your audience. Your comments should demonstrate respect, support, and empathy for the writer; use formal, academic diction; and avoid racist or sexist language.

In-Text Comments: Your in-text comments should include specific suggestions for revision by providing five in-text comments and two Community Comments. That is, your feedback should indicate particular passages (words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs) in the essay, and provide specific and thoughtful suggestions for improvement.

Rubric-Criteria Comments and Overall Comments: You should focus on the overall concerns, providing complete, evaluative sentences for at least three of the rubric categories and complete, thoughtful sentences to the "Overall Comments" that discuss the paper as a whole.

Sensodyne Toothpaste Anglin 1 Sensodyne is a company that concentrates on improving tooth enamel by reducing tooth sensitivity with toothpaste.The toothpaste was marketed in 1961 but the first product was sold by Block Drug and now it is owned by GlaxoSmithKline.The images includes methods to manage tooth sensitivity.The photographs are produced to convince consumers to purchase Sensodyne toothpastes over similar products.The advertisements are focused on reaching people that experience tooth pain while eating, drinking items, or breathing in cold temperatures regularly. The first image is of an ice cream sandwich with a sun and clouds in the background.The picture is crafted to show a dessert those with sensitive teeth are missing out on and promote their toothpaste as a way to change the foods they can consume.The ethos appeal is presented with Dr.Nisha Farma as a dentist that can report on the effectiveness of the product.She is as a practicing dentist and can show evidence of patients that have eliminated sensitivities with the toothpaste.The ad also employs the recommendations from 8 out of 10 dentists based on the TNS Dentist Research of 2015.This gives the viewer reason to believe that the toothpaste works since professionals have used it and can attest to the reliability of it.The ad with provides hope for users of the toothpaste.On the other hand, Those who don’t use Sensodyne feel sadness and guilt for their pain or the destruction of their enamel.The appeal to kairos is based on the idea of summertime being the perfect time to enjoy a cold treat and twice a day being the time required for the toothpaste to be effective.The research confirms the idea of time being a big factor with “between two and four weeks from initiation of treatment” being the estimated amount of time necessary for pain levels related to dentin hypersensitivity to be decreased by chemical compounds.The image employs bright colors such as blue, white, and orange to symbolize happiness from pain reduction.The use of the color brown which “stimulates the appetite” makes Sensodyne Toothpaste Anglin 2 the viewer crave the pastry when they see the advertisement and want to find solutions to their pain. The second image is of an ice cream cone and a cup of coffee stating that Sensodyne would eliminate tooth sensitivity for the viewer to enjoy these items painlessly.The support of 90% of dentists is an appeal to ethos.The pathos employed is from the viewer being tempted to eat these items after seeing the advertisement and anticipating the beverages and desserts they could enjoy after using the Sensodyne Toothpaste.Their is an appeal to kairos by saying the toothpaste would provide “24/7 Sensitivity Protection”(Image 2).This leads the viewer to believe that with the product they could completely reduce sensitivity and eat or drink anything regardless of the time of day.This is not entirely true because “treating dental hypersensitivity can be challenging for a dental professional” and toothpaste alone cannot decrease sensitivity most cases require dental operations like extractions,tooth whitening,gum surgery,crowns,filings,root canals,and veneers.The advertisement neglects to display a wide range of foods and drinks which produce sensitivity and neglects to describe other presentations of tooth sensitivity. The first image appeals to authority by depicting Dr.Farma saying “I recommend Sensodyne.”.This rhetorical fallacy is not able to clearly provide evidence showing customers that have used the product and experienced positive results.The image doesn’t include research with statistically significant differences before and after using Sensodyne to elaborate on the efficacy of the toothpaste.Furthermore,The image introducs Cum Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc by claiming the viewer is not enjoying the ice cream sandwich solely due to tooth sensitivity when one could be avoiding sweet desserts because of a restricted,diet,allergies or numerous other reasons and the advertisement assumes tooth sensitivity is the cause of an avoidance to sugary desserts.The image also doesn’t prove that the toothpaste is significantly better at treating sensitivity than other Sensodyne Toothpaste Anglin 3 toothpastes with similar formulas on the market such as Colgate,Crest,Tom’s of Maine’s products.Sensodyne is beneficial but the advertisement fails to express the chemicals that make Sensodyne dissimilar. Moreover,Research shows that tooth sensitivity can be caused by dental procedures such as root canals or crowns but many incidents of sensitivity are from tooth wear(Dababneh et.al,Page 2).Toothpastes are proven to have a positive influence on sensitivity and most dentists recommend that patients change their brushing habits or toothpastes upon diagnosing them.Potassium Nitrate is also an effective formula for reducing tooth sensitivity when applied through a toothpaste.(Walters)Sensodyne produced a toothpaste using Potassium Nitrate in 1981 but since then scientific research has produced data showing results with this chemical compound combined with other ingredients one being sodium tripolyphosphate which was incorporated into Sensodyne True White in 2016(Sensodyne.com).The toothpaste repairs eroded tooth enamel but it is only truly effective on some patients. There has been controversy over the topic of Net Neutrality, especially between Internet Service Providers (ISP) and Content Providers (CP) who are the main stakeholders on the issue. Internet Service Providers want to have the power to create “fast” and “slow” lanes depending on services that they prefer. Content Providers as well as most consumers believe that creating these lanes will affect competition for different businesses, as well as change how people use the Internet as we know it. However, another important stakeholder that is being affected by the controversy of Net Neutrality is the American Library Association (ALA). The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Their mission is to “provide leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.” (Network Neutrality, ala.org) The association’s mission could directly be affected if net neutrality was repealed, the improvement of library and information services being hindered. For this reason, there were two images released by the ALA directed to net neutrality. The American Library Association published both visual images to target the Internet Service Providers, as well as to evoke emotion and logic to persuade viewers to become more involved in the issue of net neutrality and inform them of how it will affect them in the long run. Wallace 2 In the first image, the words “Because ISP’s Shouldn’t Have VIPs.” Are bolded in the left-hand corner of the image, and they are pasted onto a navy-blue background. These words are telling the viewer that Internet Service Providers should not have the power over consumers and businesses to pick and choose how the Internet should function or what content they are exposed to. This is also targeting the Internet Service Providers and saying that they are not more important than anyone else, and this is an example of the use of Logos. Logos is used to persuade with logic, and the logic is consumers want control of the content they access on the Internet and would not want anyone to have special treatment over them when it comes to the control of content. The ALA wants people to know that they are for net neutrality and that people should be on their side. The navy-blue color of the background also helps evoke emotion toward the message. Blue is usually a color that is used to calm people or is known for being a calm or ‘cool’ color. This helps get the message across with upsetting anyone, but instead giving a sterner tone toward the image. These things help outline the ALA’s concern that Internet Service Providers will have the upper hand on the internet, and there will be little consumers and Content Providers can do about if net neutrality is repealed. In the second image it is similarly outlined, except that words instead say, “Because the Internet shouldn’t have a slow lane.” Also, the background color has changed into reddishorange color. The words and the color in the image both evoke emotion to the viewer, which is called Pathos. Pathos makes the reader feel something toward the message that is being presented, and the message being presented in this image is that consumers should be aware that if net neutrality is repealed, slow lanes will be developed and that will affect the speed at which they receive their content. Something like this would evoke anger, because usually when people must wait for something too long they get irritable, annoyed and angry. The color red can also be Wallace 3 linked to the emotion of angry or fury, which could another reason why it is the chosen color behind the words in the top right of the image. If people see this and get upset, it will push them to fight for the support of net neutrality which is the overall goal of both images. Another key thing to realize that is present in both images is that toward the bottom, there is a hashtag that reads “Libraries Transform.” The ‘o’ in transform is also displayed as if it was like a buffering or loading screen. This gives the viewer insight to another message that the American Library Association is trying to reach out to. If net neutrality is repealed, not only will Internet Service Providers being given ‘VIP’ status and slow lanes will be created, but the advancements of libraries will be hindered. When asked how net neutrality affects libraries, The American Library Association says, “we believe it is equally important to stress that the freedom of libraries and librarians to provide innovative new kinds of information services will be central to the growth and development of our democratic culture.” (Ala.org) If libraries had to follow in slow lanes, innovation for libraries would slow down tremendously and that would not only affect libraries, but educators and students as well. In this age of technology, education has moved on to being accessed and taken online. Distance Learning is something that libraries are deeply invested in so having slow lanes would make it hard to broadcast a lecture or a class. This would take a toll on libraries all over, as well as everyone that is trying to receive a higher level of education or use the library resources to learn something. The American Library Association supports net neutrality to its fullest, stating that “The vitality of voices on the Internet is critical to the intellectual freedom that libraries around the world are trying to protect and promote.” (Ala.org) The two images effectively outline the concerns of the ALA, which is Internet Service Providers being in power and the creation of slow and fast lanes, which could hinder innovation and improvement to libraries everywhere. Wallace 4 The use of Logos and Pathos assist in the effectiveness in the message in both images, evoking emotion and persuading the viewer with the use of logic. ALA wants viewers to support net neutrality and realize how it will not only affect institutions like libraries, but this digital era as we know it. Net neutrality is a leg of democracy that we cannot let go of, or who knows the rest of what holds up democracy could start to crumble after it.
