Project Management Leadership Self-Assessment

Introduction

Project management is the undertaking of a unique operation with the objective of attaining
certain specific goals that have been identified and laid out in order to be worked towards. In order
for such an endeavor to be carried out and attained a team is set apart and mandated to execute the
project. An expertly managed project delivers the objectives to be attained on time, within its
budget limit set and ensures that it brings about an integration and learning that is required within
the organization. It requires the team that has been select to undertake it to apply the knowledge
learnt, skills acquired, tools and the techniques attained in the different phases and actives of the
project in order to meet its requirements (Cattani, Ferriani, Frederiksen and Florian, 2011).
A project as a whole can be overwhelming and the team undertaking it might face
numerous challenges in undertaking it. Therefore in order for the management of a project to
achieve success they must subdivide the process of the project into distinct phases which they can
successfully undertake. The phases of a project include; the initiating phase, the planning phase,
the executing phase and the closing phase (Phillips, 2003). The team undertaking the project are
required to possess certain qualities that will equip them to undertake the project successful in each
of the phase. The absence of such qualities endangers the project and can lead to failure in the
project management process. This paper present a summary of three self-assessment that was
conducted examining the leadership potential and managerial leadership skills behavioral,
leadership style personality traits, leadership styles assessing teamwork and assessing the culture
for creativity. The paper seeks to determine if the qualities identified through the assessment are
applicable in each of the phases of the project management.

Summary of Key Insights Gained

Initiating Phase

Chapter 1 Self-Assessments: From the self-assessment on leadership potential and
managerial leadership, the results showed an average score displaying strengths of a team leader
who leads by example. I however displayed weaknesses in certain areas such as not enjoying
working with inanimate objects and not contributing ideas when not in-charge

The results of the assessment are applicable to the initiation phase because they help us
understand the characteristics of the individual and their capability in successfully undertaking the
initiation phase of a project. The initiation phase is one of the most important phases of the project
since it helps to define the nature and the project and the scope it is going to cover and is also the
ultimate determinant of the project’s success or failure (Nathan & Jones, 2003). The ability of the
team leaders and their team to properly carry out the initiation phase is therefore very crucial. From
the assessment it shows that I am a leader who leads by example which is at this phase is not
important because the project is still being considered and hasn’t been approved. On the other
hand, the assessment shows that I don’t like working with objects which is a challenge in this
phase because the project embodies an abstract idea which is being developed and evaluated. It is
presented in written materials which need to be given proper review and consideration in order to
aid in decision making. Therefore working with objects is necessary as they help visualize the
project from the start to the end as asserted by Ahn (nd) that a successful manager of a project is
one who is able to envision it from start to the end before it even begins.

On the other hand I don’t like contributing ideas when am not in-charge which could work
against the success of the initiation stage since it requires the input of all parties in order to aid in
the decision making process on the viability having all the key aspects in place.

Chapter 3 Self-Assessments: The results from the self-assessment on the behavioural
style show a high task leadership style and a high people leadership style. There is also a display
of job cantered and task oriented leadership style. These results imply that I am task oriented and
concerned with accomplishing the task at hand.

These results are essential for the initiation phase since they illustrate by ability as a leader
to undertake the initiation phase. Being task oriented ensures that I have the goal at hand in mind
and I work towards accomplishing it. In this case the goal at hand is initiating a project by first
determining its viability and its importance to the organization. Therefore I can be able to work
and attain this goal. On the other hand being people oriented means I incorporate the ideas and
contribution of the other people enriching the process and ensuring that it captures all the pros and
cons for the project before making any decision for it.

Chapter 8 Self-Assessments: The results on self-assessment on my team shows that we
have an effective team that creates an environmen...
