Comments: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE ESSAY What’s your attitude toward writing?  Discuss and record with someone near you the following: Do you feel that some people have a gift for writing and others do not? Components of the Essay  Introduction: (187) Must begin with a quote, question, or story  Last sentence of the introduction must contain the Thesis statement which includes the THREE supporting details of your body paragraphs  Body  Must contain THREE paragraphs that support the thesis statement in the order stated in your thesis statement  Conclusion (191)  Rephrases the thesis statement  Summarizes the main points  Quotation, Suggestion, Call to Action, or Prediction  HOMEWORK  Think of your greatest challenge and what were the three things that helped you overcome it….. The Introduction/Lead-In  Lead-In (187)  It’s an attention grabbing opening.  Three types are: Quotation Story or Provocative statement Question (See pre-writing packet) Use a Quotation/Lead-in  “Fish and visitors,” wrote Benjamin Franklin, “begin to smell after three days.” Last summer, when my sister and her family came to spend their two-week vacation with us, I became convinced that Franklin was right. After only three days of my family’s visit, I was thoroughly sick of my brotherin-law’s lame jokes, my sister’s endless complaints about her boss, and their children’s constant invasions of our privacy. Use an incident or brief story/Lead -in Early Sunday morning, the young mother dressed her little girl warmly and gave her a candy bar, a picture book, and a wellworn stuffed rabbit. Together, they drove downtown to a Methodist church. There the mother told the little girl to wait on the stone steps until children began arriving for Sunday school. Then the young mother drove off, abandoning her five-year-old because she couldn’t cope with being a parent anymore. This incident is one of thousands of cases of child neglect and abuse that occur annually. Perhaps the automatic right to become a parent should no longer exist. Would-be parents should be forced to apply for parental licenses for which they would have to meet three important conditions. Ask one or more questions/Lead-in  What is love? How do we know that we are really in love? When we meet that special person, how can we tell that our feelings are genuine and not merely infatuation? And, if they are genuine, will these feelings last? Love, as we all know, is difficult to define. But most people agree that true and lasting love involves far more than mere physical attraction. Love involves mutual respect, the desire to give rather than take, and the feeling of being wholly at ease. Introduction Styles: (188)  Give historical background information  Jazz began in the night clubs of Louisiana, mainly New Orleans.  Tell an interesting story  Early Sunday morning, the young mother dressed her little girl warmly and gave her a candy bar, a picture book, and a well-worn stuffed rabbit.  Present a vivid description  MMMMM the creamy, coldness of the ice-cream chilled my mouth and continued doing so as it reached my stomach in the 105 degree scorching Texas summer.  Present an opposing position  High school is a waste of time  Give a definition Activity:  With your partner, complete Practice 5, page 189- 190 A-D  You have 10 minutes  You may refer to your notes and your book Thesis Statement: (177)  The Thesis Statement: Expresses the main topic of the essay  What the essay is about  It contains the controlling idea (three points)  What will be found within the body  It is a complete sentence that usually appears in the essay’s introductory paragraph.  You will place it as the last sentence of the introductory paragraph (see rubric).  Locating information in a library, writing a report and speaking up in class discussions, were the steps taken for overcoming the challenge of returning to school. (complete/incomplete)  Celebrities are often poor role models because of the ways they dress, talk, and behave.  Stress in the fast-food workplace has led to serious physical, psychological, and emotional problems for employees Support Thesis with Specific Evidence Support the thesis with specific reasons or details.  My stepmother has three qualities I admire.    Patience Thoughtfulness Sense of humor  College students should live at home.    Stay in touch with family Avoid distractions of dorm or apartment life Save money  The first day on a new job can be nerve-racking.    Meeting new people Finding your way around a new place Learning new rules and procedures Let’s Dissect:  Bookstore shelves today are crammed with dozens of different diet books. The American public seems willing to try any sort of diet, especially the ones that promise instant, miraculous results. And authors are more than willing to invent new fad diets to cash in on this craze. Unfortunately, some of these fad diets are ineffective or even unsafe. One of the worst fad diets is the Palm Beach plan. It is impractical, doesn’t achieve the results it claims, and is a sure route to poor nutrition. Dissection Continued  When I decided to return to school at age thirty-five, I wasn’t at all worried about my ability to do the work. After all, I was a grown woman who had raised a family, not a confused teenager fresh out of high school. But when I started classes, I realized that those “confused teenagers” sitting around me were in much better shape for college than I was. They still had all their classroom skills in bright, shiny condition, while mine had grown rusty from disuse. I had to learn to locate information in a library, how to write a report, and even how to speak up in class discussions. Conclusion: (191)  The conclusion is the final paragraph the rephrases the thesis statement and summarizes the main points in the essay.  To make your conclusion more interesting, you can close with a prediction, suggestion, quotation, or call to action. Prediction  Finally, music is a way for hip-hop and rap musicians to share their personal culture with the world. This cultural can be reflected through different values, religious beliefs, and ways of life. If you are concerned about hip-hop portraying negative images, don’t abandon the music yet. There are many artists who promote and will continue to promote positive values through upbeat lyrics. Suggestion  Finally, music is a way for hip-hop and rap musicians to share their personal culture with the world. This cultural can be reflected through different values, religious beliefs, and ways of life. Hip-hop fans should encourage musicians to continue to give a positive message through their music. Call to Action  Finally, music is a way for hip-hop and rap musicians to share their personal culture with the world. This cultural can be reflected through different values, religious beliefs, and ways of life. If you are concerned by the negative message of hiphop music, make your opinions heard by joining the debate on hip-hop blogs and buying CDs from musicians who only write positive lyrics. Quotation  Finally, music is a way for hip-hop and rap musicians to share their personal culture with the world. This cultural can be reflected through different values, religious beliefs, and ways of life. According to hip-hop artist Doug E. Fresh, “Hip-Hop is supposed to uplift and create, to educate people on a larger level, and to make a change.” Introduction and Conclusion  Introduction _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ ____________________  Conclusion _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ ____________________ Activity  With your partner, complete practice 6 A-C on page 191-192.

The Greatest Scare
"Think with your feet," once said Vinayak. I never knew feet have brains! I was part of a
team on a mountain expedition. We climbed well due to the adequate preparation we had, and
now we were descending when all hell broke loose; lost in a thick bamboo forest with no sense
of direction. The urgency to get home, the courage to do something and the hope there is a way
allowed us to descend Mountain Kiliman safely.
The urgency to get home was a powerful motivator because we had missed our family
members and friends. Up Mountain Kiliman there were no mobile phones or any modern means
of communication. We were on our own a horrifying and frightening situation. We were not
worried about the wild animals we just wanted to get home. Earlier during training with an
American wildlife organization our team leader and a few of team members had been trained on
survival skills in the wilderness.
The technology had failed us. The compass that we relied on appeared to be faulty. Any
direction that it pointed north or south all we wanted was to get home. Descending a mountain is
more relaxed than going up. Whatever it has we had no choice but to find a way out of the
confusion. Lost up the mountain was a fearful encounter; there was no sign of external help. We
had walked for over five hours ex...
