1 CURRICULUM INCEPTION Assignment 1: Curriculum Inception Angela Bass Dr. Melanie Gallman EDU 555 Strayer University January 20, 2018 2 CURRICULUM INCEPTION Introduction Curriculum development describes how a training or teaching organization plans and guides learning. It involves planning, implementation, and monitoring of a systematic process that creates a positive learning environment. It is, therefore, important to design a pilot curriculum that ensures proper evaluation of the content, teaching materials as well as teaching methods involved in the changed curriculum (McKinn, 2008). The pilot curriculum also serves as an assessment tool for acceptance of the curriculum by the faculty and students. It also aids in recognizing the gaps created and the missing content. This study will consider the Lee County School District and analyze the benefits of a piloting curriculum for high school level business studies. School District The Lee County School District is in the state of Mississippi. Lee County is in the northeastern part of Mississippi. The district is comprised of thirteen schools and a center for academic improvement that serves kindergarten through twelfth grade. The schools are in seven cities within Lee County. The district is run by the school board and a superintendent. The school board consists of five elected officials from Lee County. The superintendent is also an elected official from Lee County. They are selected in a four-year term and they meet monthly to discuss educational issues such as curriculum and performance. 3 CURRICULUM INCEPTION The population of Lee County is approximately seven thousand students currently enrolled in all programs offered throughout the district. This population is a mixture of students with different social/economic statuses and different ethnic groups. This includes students who are Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, Native Americans, Black Americans, and Multiracial. The teachers and leaders of this district are culture-centered and diverse. They must be in order for these students to perform well in school. The administration is determined to create equal opportunities for all students. The district utilizes the Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards and the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks as the district’s kindergarten through grade twelve instructional management plan. Various instructional strategies, including large and small group instruction, differentiated instruction, cooperative learning, hands-on-activities, and integration of subject areas within units, are used in classrooms to promote maximum student achievement. The policies of the state, school, and teachers greatly influence curriculum development and its implementation. These policies address the support of curriculum development, curriculum implementation, and monitoring of programs and criteria used in selecting the instructional methods. It is essential that state policies are considered while developing curriculum. These include the disciplinary protocols, regulations and remedial programs among others. 4 CURRICULUM INCEPTION Discipline of Business Studies The discipline of business studies involves teaching students the fundamentals and theories of business. It is a discipline with a diverse subject content including accounting, bookkeeping, economics, marketing, and several more fields. The main goal of business studies is to provide the student with opportunities to acquire basic business skills and experience necessary for college entry. Introducing business studies in the high schools of a school district is essential in the development of social-emotional skills, leadership skills, academic skills, and good written and oral communication skills. These skills are beneficial in the pursuit of higher learning. Rationale of Pilot Curriculum The rationale behind the pilot curriculum of business studies lies in the vital importance of equipping students with knowledge and understanding of the business world in which they live. There are many benefits to students of the pilot curriculum. It enables students to appreciate the issues that challenge businesses and stakeholders. Students should be able to make informed and rational decisions regarding business matters. The purpose of the pilot curriculum is to prove the ability and effectiveness of the content included in the curriculum. This entails the planning, management, and delivery methods intended for the curriculum. Finally, the students benefit from improved achievement. The pilot curriculum will ensure that all aspects that affect education performance are keenly evaluated. 5 CURRICULUM INCEPTION Instructional Goals Instructional goals describe what the students will be able to do in the future due to the introduction of a new unit. It offers solutions to instructional needs. Well-trained students critically think about their future. They know how to prepare for their impending success in their field of study of business. They know how to formulate research projects through collection of relevant data through their research. They understand varied subjects that pertain to business. They know how to set a goal and they know how to achieve it. 6 CURRICULUM INCEPTION References http://www.leecountyschools.us/about/ourdistrict http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/ http://www.rcu.msstate.edu/curriculum/curriculumdownload http://www.seniorsecondary.tki.org.nz/social-sciences/business-studies/rationale McKimm, J. Curriculum Foundations Assignment 2: Curriculum Foundations Angela Bass Dr. Melanie Gallman EDU 555 Strayer University February 18, 2018 1 Curriculum Foundations Summary of Aspects in Assignment 1 In the first assignment, the study analyzed the benefits of piloting a curriculum for high school business studies in the Lee County School District of Mississippi. The Lee County School District was used because of the diverse groups of students. It is because of this diversity that exists in the student body that led to the proposal of new curriculum in business studies. The introduction of the curriculum in the high school is essential for students that want a career in the field of business studies. The first assignment also analyzed the instructional goals that the students will most likely accumulate while learning in business studies. It is apparent that their training on research methods will apply to their critical thinking by their ability to apply their critical thinking skills by research projects, their collection of data and their presentations. Another instructional goal in the introduction of business studies is that the knowledge will help students become more business-minded so that they can accomplish all of their business goals. The study also found out that business studies help determine the best approach likely to be used to achieve set goals and achievements. Approaches to Curriculum Development There are many curriculum development models that can be used to ensure success. You must choose the approach that will be most effective in meeting the needs of the students. While planning a new curriculum, you must pick the correct approach. Some of the approaches to curriculum development are the humanistic approach, system approach, behavioral approach, and managerial approach. 2 Curriculum Foundations The main goal of the humanistic approach is the development of the student as the main objective of the curriculum. This approach should be student-centered where the objective of the curriculum is to develop the intellectual capacity of the student. This approach matches with our instructional goal of the ability of business studies to ensure student satisfaction. With this approach students are satisfied because the student’s views and considerations are put in place. Another approach is the system approach. The system approach manages, controls, and improves the process and products of education. This approach analyzes the relationship between different departments and institutions are assessed. The link between the different elements affects the outcome. This happens when a change in one element has an effect on the overall performance of the system. Another approach is the behavioral approach. This approach emphasizes setting the goals and objectives of the curriculum. This helps teachers who are planners, to make certain that the curriculum reflects the objectives of the study. To determine the success of the curriculum, planners will assess the impact that the strategies put in place had on the change in behavior of the learner (Standridge, 2002). Lastly, we have the managerial approach. This approach focuses on the Curriculum Managers and how they formulate policies and priorities. It establishes the direction of change and innovation, and planning and organizing curriculum, and instruction. The Curriculum Manager oversees developing the school’s educational goals and planning the curriculum with students, parents, and teachers. 3 Curriculum Foundations Philosophical/Theoretical Approach to Curriculum Development Business is a field that requires ideas and concepts in the process of ensuring subject is clear to all students. To develop the intellect of students, the teacher must use opposing ideas in the process of explaining the meaning of a text, an approach known as idealism. The curriculum development should gather ideas on business studies. Information on business issues and the impact on students should be evaluated to provide ideas to students on how to handle these business issues. However, realism deals with scientific methods of problem-solving. It emphasizes the process; therefore, the students are better equipped with the applicable aspects. When designing the business studies curriculum design, the planner should ensure a good understanding of the scientific methods and technologies that must be applied in business studies curriculum. This approach may be used in training of research methods instructional goal since it may require the input of different technologies and scientific methods (Babadogan & Olkun,2006). Psychological Motivational Approach to Curriculum Development Cognitive and metacognitive dimensions cannot be fulfilled in the absence of motivational dimension in curriculum development. Such motivational approach may include constructivism where the students can develop such knowledge on what they have learned. Personal construction of meaning will motivate the students because they are not confined to perfectly explain the meaning as they appear in business studies but rather on how they personally understand. Having such flexibility may motivate the students to promote the curriculum development. 4 Curriculum Foundations Cultural Influence that has the Greatest Impact on the School District Cultural diversity has had a great impact on the Lee County School District. Cultural diversity turns into cultural bias where other student ethnicities are discriminated against the students of the culture of the school district. i.e. Hispanic students may find it hard to cope with the culture of the white American children. Students in the district schools dominated by the white Americans may not respect a bi-racial student, which in turn makes it hard to cope with the learning system. A way to deal with this cultural issue is that business studies curriculum should put in place. A cultural integration where people from different geographical groups can interact and accommodate each other’s perspectives and cultural practices. Strategy for Incorporating Critical Thinking Skills Using Bloom’s Taxonomy of Cognitive Objectives The high schoolers of the Lee County district may apply knowledge strategy from the taxonomy of cognitive objectives. Under this strategy, the students are required to learn some facts from the information provided. Through this strategy, the student can have an understanding that the research methods that are used in research analysis in business studies. The main rationale for adopting this strategy for business studies is its ability to provide knowledge on the methods of data analysis and presentations can be easily understood. Through the knowledge strategy, content on the important project research questions may be formulated. Moreover, it is also possible for knowledge strategy to provide an insight in business studies through the continuous sharing information among the students hence increasing the understanding of different ideas. 5
