Summary and Response Instructions
Why do I assign Summary and Responses?
I assign them so that I have a way to know you have done the reading/listening/viewing and
have conscientiously interacted with the material (article, podcast, and/or video).
Why do the Summary and Responses have to be in a particular format?
In your working lives, you will have supervisors who will ask you to analyze and summarize
materials. Most of the time, these supervisors will want your analysis in a particular format so
that when they read your analysis, they can go right to the area they need information on in
that moment. In addition, someday you will be supervisors of people who do analyses for you
and you will appreciate them being done in a format that works for your team and you.
Required Format
There needs to be three (3) sections, each with their own heading: Introduction, Summary, and
Response.
In the Introduction section, you should say who created the material you are analyzing, who
published the material, and a general statement about what the material is about.
In the Summary section, you are to write about at least four (4) main points from the material.
In the Response Section, you are to state why you think the material relates to the main theme
of the course. You are also to respond to at least one of the four points you wrote about in your
Summary section. You are also supposed to comment on whether the material analyzed was
either beneficial or a waste of time and then tell me why you have chosen your response.
Length
These Summary and Responses should be no more than 350 words.
Grading
If your Summary and Response is not in the right format, you will get a zero. Each assignment
outside of the quizzes are worth only a few points but the zeroes can add up.
If you don’t follow the rest of the instructions, you will only be eligible for partial credit.

ENG 225 CCP Week 3 Auteur Theory Director Arthur Penn Paper
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 8 of Film: From Watching to Seeing, as well as your instructor’s guidance and lecture materials, and Chapter 7 from Film Genre Reader IV.
Note: You should watch any chosen film twice—once to ensure that you have grasped the storytelling and once to take more specific notes on aspects of the film you wish to discuss. You may choose any appropriate director, but be sure to consider the three criteria of auteur theory before making your selection.
Pick one film from the list, second film has to be by the same director
