Introduction
Ever since the establishment of government systems, it has been the government’s duty to
rid the citizens and the country at large of criminals. For this to happen, criminals get arrested
and taken to containment facilities. In the past, the offenders were roughed up, tortured and even
killed in the name of cleansing the society of dangerous people. As times changed, people also
changed the way they handled criminals by introducing more humane forms of punishments for
the offenders in the community.
State and federal punishment objectives
The United States has the highest number of people in correctional facilities than any
other country in the world. There are some reasons behind the increase in the figure annually, but
the main reason is the high level of unemployment among some of the residents of different
states. To deal with the ever-increasing number, the United States government came up with
punishment objectives on both the state and federal levels prisons as a way to control the rate of
crime in the states and also provide fair and just punishment for the criminals arrested and
sentenced to jail.
All correctional facilities have a similar objective; to offer adequate punishment to the
criminals with the aim of reducing the chances of an offender repeating the same offense since
the sentence deters the individual and others with similar opinions of the opportunity to commit
