Eating healthy

With the increase in lifestyle diseases of late, it has become of great importance for
people to be keen on their eating habits, leading healthy lifestyles is important in maintaining a
good health. Eating healthy begins with acquiring information on new ways of eating; this may
include adding fresh fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and also reducing the intake of sugar, salt,
and fat. Eating healthy also includes learning about moderation, balance, and variety. Aiming for
balance involves eating foods from every food group- proteins, fruits, and vegetables, grains,
dairy, listening to the body, eating only when one is hungry, and stopping whenever one is
satisfied. Variety involves being adventurous, and making different choices of foods in each food
group, this will ensure that a person gets all the nutrients they require. Practicing moderation will
ensure that one does not consume too little or too much of a single food, healthy eating can entail
eating all foods in moderation. Eating healthy helps in getting the right balance of minerals,
vitamins, and all the other nutrients, this can help in the production of more energy and better
stress handling. Eating healthy means adjusting eating patterns in a way that one can live with
and at the same time enjoy all their life. Matching this with physical activity is highly likely to
enhance a healthy weight (Croll et al, 2001).
Reading nutritional labels
A survey done by Cowburn and Stockley (2005) shows that almost all food marketers
and manufacturers use nutrition labels to help the consumer understand the contents of the food
product. However, they found that the actual use of these labels by customers whenever making
a food product purchase is very low. This presents the issue of many consumers not being able to
read and understand the nutrition labels and therefore not able to use them to their benefit.
Evidence shows that the use of nutrition labels is dependent on the type of food product being
purchased by a customer, and whether the consumer has used the product before or is buying it
for the first time. However, most consumers seem to be able to retrieve simple information on
nutrition labels and make relevant calculations-sometimes in terms of calorie intake and are
therefore able to compare different products using this simple numerical calculation (Grunert &
Wills, 2007). Despite this, their ability to accurately interpret a nutrition label decreases with the
complexity of the language used in the label. Other times, consumers do not even care to look at
the nutrition labels and end up choosing unhealthy products. Awareness should be made on this
so that customers can learn how to read the labels and consequently have the power to compare
packaged food products and decide which one to buy, on the basis of their needs and preferences.
The use of interpretational aids such as verbal descriptors as well as reference values should also
be encouraged so that the consumer is easily able to read nutritional labels and make viable
product comparisons. Any improvements made by the manufacturers in making the language
easier will help push consumers in the right direction, but the main aim is that consumers should
be able to read these nutrition labels to help them select healthy products.
