Brow et al., (2015) study aims at providing empirical evidence on ways to mitigate on
substance abuse among adolescents with psychiatric comorbidity. The study’s justification is
based on the need to reduce the health externalities advanced by substance abuse. Part of
available literature indicates that substance abuse is motivated by a number of factors.
However, this article takes a more focused approach as it attempts to aid in the reduction
substance abuse using the clinical approach (Brow et al., 2015). In particular, the authors
relied on the Motivation Interviewing intervention as the clinical approach. This technique
was administered at two levels: the plus treatment as usual (Mi) vs the treatment as usual only
(TAU).
The participants were adolescents residing in the USA. Their respective ages were in
between 13-17 years. The participants were recruited from various Providence hospital (Brow
et al., 2015). The sampling technique appears judgmental in the sense that the researchers had
prior knowledge where to recruit them. The study relied on a quantitative approach to probe
for for deeper association between the various variables under study.
The study established that the participants who were exposed to the MI had a delayed
