Abstract
The implementation of sustainable housing requires adequate support from all beneficiaries of
the program, and this includes the government, the housing industry, and the general population.
In the event, the public does not have adequate awareness on the meaning and relevance of
sustainable housing, the effort to ensure all members of a given community have access to
affordable and sustainable housing may fail due to inadequate support from the public
(Mulliner). The durable design of these houses seeks to retain some of the forgotten values of
ancient architecture and urbanization.
In most developing countries, the sustainable aspect of housing is essential to ensure all citizens
are in a position to afford homes at a time when the country experiences a high rate of
urbanization. For a nation to achieve sustainable housing for her citizens, the housing industry
needs to emphasize the use of full site designs, natural light and ventilation systems and the use
of renewable sources of energy like solar power. The paper reports a survey carried out to
understand the underlying potential in the implementation of sustainable housing in Saudi
Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is one of the fast developing countries found in the Arabian Gulf, showing rampant
development over the last few decades. With an estimated population of about fifteen million
citizens and over four million non-citizen residents in the country, about 82% of the total
population lives in urban settlements (Asif). Since the country’s urbanization rate is relatively
high, the cost of living is also in the rise, and this will result in an extra burden on the residents
of urban cities on the price they spend on facilitating their housing, transport, food, and access to
public amenities like schools and hospitals. This high cost of living discourages a large number
