Rhino foods started in 1981as a small ice cream shop owned by Ted Castle who by then
was working as an assistant hockey coach at the University of Vermont three years later, Castle
quit coaching and concentrated on his ice cream shop as he managed to add brownies and
cookies. Within that period, he also managed to expand operations by supplying dough to fellow
Vermont business Ben & Jerry’s, where a staffer tried mixing Castle’s raw cookie dough into ice
cream. Due to its unique flavor the blockbuster, Rhino managed to grow into a leading producer
of frozen dough and other dessert products. Some of the key factors that led to the rapid growth
of Rhino include paying their employees better that their competitor, offering their employees
bonuses based on their performance and as well persuaded a local credit union to make same-day
loans to its employees of up to $1,000. Rhino also offered English classes to its employees who
came from Burlington’s refugee committee. These individuals accounted for 30% of its
employees. These made Rhino to motivate its employees, create a better working environment
and achieved a long-term goal of growth. Currently, it has more than 140 employees with
revenues of over $50 million. Since 2007, Rhino foods have been rated among the best and
fastest growing small companies in America (Fombrun, C. J. (2007).)
