Thesis: Girish Karnad in the setting of the play Naga Mandala, 1977-1988 precisely
focuses on depicting the hot topic of marriage in the past and present centuries under the in-depth
cultural diversification such as racial groups, social classes, and gender (Pandey, 81). The play is
a story based on one young lady, Rani married to Appanna who abuses and mistreats her to the
extent that she feels desperate and ready to win the love back. The desperation pushes her into
seeking a love concussion which she adds in his drink, but accidentally it pours before Appanna
gets to drink it. Naga, a cobra with the abilities to take a human shape licks the ‘treated’ milk and
madly falls in love with Appanna’s wife; he appears at night to Rani assuming the identity of
Appanna who spends his night hours with his concubine. The innocent Rani finds herself in a
dilemma that she cannot comprehend the fact that her husband is so rude during the day but
during the nighttime, he is romantic and caring. Unknowingly she gets into physical intimacy
with Naga. Surprisingly, she conceives ...
