Introduction

Sign language is the use of non-verbal communication cues to communicate to the dumb
and deaf people. It involves the use of manual communication to convey certain meanings to
non-verbal cues used by the deaf and dumb to communicate. The use of sign language in
communication dates back to the early 5th century when Plato and Socrates engaged in a dialogue
using signs. Later, the American Sign Language Association designed certain physical signs to
be used to help the deaf and dumb to communicate. During this process, the manual alphabet and
fingerspelling system of communication was the widely used form of sign language. Although
the language was not documented, this form of sign language enhanced the transfer of word
available in written or spoken language into sign language. Later on, the manual alphabets
became the order and norm of secret communication.
Discussion
Sign language involves the use of gestures, the orientation of the fingers, facial
expression, body movement and different orientation of the body and arm to communicate. It
bears a close resemblance to the spoken language, although the structure of the sentences and the
grammatical arrangement of words vary to increase the level of efficiency and fluency in
speaking (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 2015). It has
