METAL CASTING

Introduction
Casting is defined as a process through which a molten-metal is poured into a mold with a
hollow-cavity of the required shape. After the molten-metal material is poured, both the metal and
mold are allowed to cool after which the metal part, i.e. the casting is extracted. Additionally, the
sand casting, also referred to as sand molded casting is a metal-casting process involving using
sand as the molding material. Over 70% of metal castings are attained using the sand casting
process. Generally, molds made using sand are cheaper and sufficiently refractory. Currently, sand
casting is categorized as the most widely method of casting metals. The process is conducted using
expendable-sand molds in producing complex metal parts. Since the sand-molds have to be
destroyed to remove the formed metal part, sand casting is characterized by low production-rate.
The process of sand casting uses a metal, furnace, pattern, and sand-mold. The molten-metal is
then melted in the furnace and mixed up with the sand material. Though sand casting is cheap and
affordable, there are some rules that must be followed to ensure that the casting is free of defects:
The first one is shrinkage-driven whereas the second one is micro-porosity (Casting in sand made
easy, 2011).
