Hey guys!

I started thinking about how synonymous Excel is with spreadsheet applications and how Excel has consistently been the top choice when it comes to spreadsheet applications. However, Excel is not a free application, which is sometimes easy to forget as we get many Microsoft Office applications for free as UT students. So I started to think about the free alternatives to Excel and whether or not they compare.

I came across this article that lays out a few free alternatives to Excel. I believe out of the alternatives presented, I was only familiar with Google Sheets. So, let me know what you guys think. Are these alternatives substantial? Would you ever switch to any of the alternatives if you had to pay for Excel? Even if you didn't? What are some features you would absolutely need in a spreadsheet application?

Fidelity is one of the largest mutual fund and financial service providers in the US. The company had estimates miscalculated by $2.6 billion due to an accountants input error. As their accountant is required to transfer the net realized gain/loss from financial records to a separate Excel spreadsheet for additional calculations. However, the accountant "omitted the minus sign on a net capital loss of $1.3 billion and incorrectly treated it as net capital gain on this separate spreadsheet." (Wailgum, 2007). Evidently, the dividend estimate was off by $2.6 billion, and their share distribution for the month was a little too high ($4.32/share). What do you think could have been done differently to avoid this error? Reference: Wailgum, T. (2007, August 17). Eight of the Worst Spreadsheet Blunders. It seems crazy that something as little as a minus sign could cost a business this much money and ruin its reputation. This accountant would have been better off reviewing the spreadsheet, (which seems obvious), and he probably would have noticed the $2.6 billion dollar error. However, a company of this size should have a way of filtering out mistakes like this. Select: All None Message Actions Expand All Collapse All

Alternatives to Microsoft Excel

One thing that all people can agree upon is that having a little competition leads to
efficiency, hence, it is very important that there are some alternatives available to excel. The
results are very clear: Microsoft introduced Excel’s web version, “Excel Web Application”
(Wilson). However, I would not switch to this app because despite being a web-based app, it
