Hospital Emergency Preparedness
Abstract
Emergencies are inevitable in hospitals, every hospital has been faced with an
emergency situation and there is a likelihood that the situations will not end. It is very
hazardous for a hospital to be caught unaware during an emergency situation because in most
cases, the community looks up unto them. Coming up with hospital emergency responses is
one the ways that ensure preparedness during different emergency situations, a well drafted
and researched emergency responses plan to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the
organization.
Preparedness
Hospital administrators know about the risks and agony of being in an emergency
situation and the expectations that the community has on them. During emergencies, hospitals
are viewed as saviors and to keep the faith of the victims, there is a need to get prepared and
avoid being caught off guard. Emergency preparedness plan involves many people including
the community, the police, medical providers and the fire department, the hospital plays a
small but vital role in the process.
The preparation plan aims at ensuring the effectiveness of hospitals in saving lives
and helping during critical situations. Research indicates switching to an emergency response
situation has a great implication on hospitals but the preparedness should ensure that the
normal hospital routines are kept (Bhattacharya, 2013).
Disaster response preparation is set of guidelines and procedural activities lay down to

for an emergency action is taken to rescue the situation. Therefore when these procedural
activities are already in place, it will be easier to respond to that particular emergency.
A planned system of control activities such as a combination of protocols,
communication, structure and equipment and personnel involved should be designed in a
manner to aid any occurrence of an emergency. Hospitals should always have emergency
teams ready anytime and all times. Resources such as ambulances should always be at the
hospital faculty well equipped and in good condition for it to be in use in case of an
unplanned activity.
Additionally, a hospital should always have well-trained personnel team who will be
quick and swift to respond to an emergency without being looked for. The communication
system should always be effective and reliable. Sirens should be automatically installed to
read signs and wail in order to alert and give way for assembling of any resource required for
disaster (DeLuca, Pickerin, Roward, Durns, Miller $ Cienk 2015)
