Introduction

Culture includes customs, beliefs, and practices that are exercised by a group of people in
a society (Corno & Anderman, 2015). Hotel Rwanda is a 2004 movie that was based on the
Rwanda genocide. The movie stars Paul Rusesabagina who is the manager of the Hôtel des Mille
Collines, his wife Tatiana Rusesabagina and his three children as the main characters. The wars
that led to the Rwanda genocide occurred between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes, where the Hutu
tribe people were massacring the Tutsi for allegedly stealing their lands. Throughout the movie,
Paul’s love for his family is tested on the basis of tribal differences but his love and care for his
family prevailed as they managed to flee Rwanda safely. This essay provides a comprehensive
assessment of the cultural differences among the families which includes a description of Paul’s
family setting, his family’s values, health care practices, and adaptation to the ethnic frictions in
the country, influence of the culture and ethnic traits on the family processes and the assessment
of development using the Beavers system model.
