Hills like White Elephants Character Analysis

Ernest Hemingway wrote this story and is about a young man and woman who are
discussing abortion. Nonetheless, the word abortion does not appear anywhere in the story, but
one can understand it through the literacy elements (symbolism and setting) used by the author.
The story was published back in 1927 and takes place in a Spanish train station. The story is a
tale, but it tells a bigger story than itself. A great part of the story is just dialogue between the
couple, but they don't seem to be married. They are in an important part of their lives where they
have to decide whether to abort or not to. The female character is called Jig, but the male is
unknown he is just called the American or just man. Though not married their relationship has to
lead to the girl getting pregnant. It seems they are both travelers who sleep in several hotels
before moving to the next destination or city (Hemingway 212). Nevertheless, the couple’s
relationship seems like it could just be shallow.
