Client:Name:Gabby Martinez (F, 19)Presenting Issues:Gabby currently resides in her parents’ home, which she states is “generally OK as long as (she does) what they tell (her) to do.” Gabby graduated from high school with fairly good grades, but decided not go to college. She states that she wasn’t sure at the time what she wanted to do, and her father told her “not to waste (his) money.” Since then, Gabby has had a series of low-paying jobs, from which she is usually fired for missing too much work. She says that if she found a job she liked, she would probably take it more seriously, but so far that has not happened.Gabby also states that she is getting a lot of pressure from her parents to “find a husband and settle down,” although she thinks she is too young for such a major step in her life. She also currently does not have a significant other and feels pressured by her parents in that area as well. Gabby is feeling anxious and lost, and is looking for guidance.Cultural Profile:The family is Latinx. They are Seventh-Day Adventists, and Gabby’s parents are very active in the church. Gabby has strong faith but does not believe the same things her parents do. As a teenager she clashed often with church doctrine, leading to many arguments with her parents. She is less vocal about her differences now, but maintains that she is “not as religious as (her parents) are.” Gabby feels a strong connection to her Latinx heritage, but also thinks some of the influences are “based in archaic beliefs” and are “too old fashioned.” This has also caused some conflict with her parents, who are quite traditional.Family History:Both of Gabby’s parents (Jeannette, F, 49 years and Miguel, M, 47 years) come from large, extended families, many of whom live within an hour’s drive. Gabby has grown closer with her cousins and second cousins over the years, and considers these people – along with her family-of-origin – as most important in her life. The extended family gathers for holidays and events often. Gabby lives in her parents’ home with her brother Tommy (M, 7 years) and sister Christina (F, 12 years). Christina was adopted by Gabby’s parents four years ago; she is Gabby’s biological second cousin. Tommy has Down syndrome and Christina has symptoms of both RAD and PTSD. Resource:Broderick, P.
