Feste, who acted as clown seems to be doing and saying nonsense things but beneath this
character is an intelligent man. Iola has commented on this after she had a conversation with this
fellow. Viola realized that to become an effective clown one has the ability to judge different
personalities as well as moods of different people he is interacting with. With this ability, he will
know when it is the right time to talk, to say things and the appropriate time to keep quiet. The
irony here is Feste acts like a fool but he depicts and intelligent character in this play.
Olivia’s character has shifted in this scene. Before, she is mourning, indifferent, and feeling close
to Malvolio. Her grief in losing Malvolio was as strong as the love sickness that Orsino felt for
her. However, as the play advances, Viola won Olivia who became deeply infatuated and is very
much willing to give herself to Cesario and done many actions that are unusual for a
noblewoman to do. But as the scene reaches the ending, Olivia’s begging to Cesario has been
