Every business across the globe must adhere to certain ethical and legal issues in their day
to day running. Businesses are expected to be fully compliant with the federal and state laws, safety
regulations as well as monetary policies which are applicable. When a business is in breach of
these policies it is said to be having unhealthy business practices. An example is Brookline bank
which the management encourages the accountants to cook accounts in the favor of their company.
These practices involve inflating the company’s expenses to evade taxes, and wage inequalities
amongst employees.
This situation will be analyzed through the normative ethical theory which represents the
attempt to define moral or ethical issues. It investigates the standards for the rightfulness or
wrongfulness of a certain situation. This theory is not only focused on peoples’ moral belief but
also whether it’s correct to hold such a belief. Although the business is involved in tax evasion and
it’s accepted but the management and the staff it is morally wrong. It’s also unethical as they pay
their employees unfairly despite the firm making profits.
