Subject Matter
In the painting, Venus stands naked in the middle of the portrait, born of the sea
she arises from (Harris and Zucker). Venus is blown by the winds coming from her left
side towards the shore. The winds are depicted by Zephyrus-god of the winds and Aura-a
gentle breeze, who hover above the air and are intertwined with each other. The gentle
winds shower her with rose petals and according to myth, the rose is said to have
flowered for the first time ever when Venus was born. On her right, she is waited upon by
a handmaiden called Hora that waits to cover her naked body with a cloak as soon as she
steps upon the shore. The ground is covered with violets. Violets were used as a symbol

of modesty but then again they were also ingredients in love potions. Venus was the
goddess of love. The aesthetic essence of the painting is evident in the delicate
decorations of the Hora’s flowing dress, the cloak that she awaits to cover Venus with,
the pure beauty of Venus’ body from her hair to her fair skin and the gold fringes on the
trees in the background.

The context for the creation of The Birth of Venus was not in the Christian sense.
