Introduction

One decade ago, the HR department was primarily charged with the fundamental roles of
record keeping, ensuring that the company complied with the rule of law, wage determination,
planning of compensation and other benefits. Over the years, the HR department has evolved and
transformed drastically following advancement in technology, vicious recession and the
emergence of a new generation of workers (Parry et al., 2013). Ten years ago, organizations
were worried about how to conduct succession planning and how to equip leaders with the
necessary skills for them to become successful. Nowadays, the employee’s verdict is an issue of
great concern following the increased competition for a skilled workforce. This paper explores
trends in the HR department for the past ten years with the sole intention of understanding the
changes that organizations need to embrace.

Ten years ago, managers would make decisions without consulting or involving the
employee because they did not understand the value and the significance of the workforce in
