Gimpel the Fool
Gimpel, the Fool by Isaac Bashevis Singer, elaborates on the story of a young man who
was regarded as a fool by the community due to his naivety and gullibility. He was labeled a fool
and other nicknames which suggested that he could not reason for himself. The people played
tricks on him regardless of the consequences that would be associated with the jokes. Gimpel
always ignored the people and moved on with his life giving the people a chance to continue
with their habit of making a fool out of him. His ignorance made the people of Frampol the
notion that he was a weakling for he could not stand up for himself. This paper seeks to analyze
in depth the complexity of Gimpel`s character.
