Running head: THE CONCEPT OF LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY The Concept of Leadership and Diversity Student’s Name: Institution: Date: 1 THE CONCEPT OF LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSTITY 2 The Concept of Leadership and Diversity Indisputably, human beings life tends to rotate in and about the social, economic and political aspects which attribute to diversities of life. As people embrace their political, economic and social life aspects leaders arise and diversity concept came into play. This paper details three psychological theories of leadership and their implications. Also, the paper tends to explain some specific authors perspective with regard barriers/challenges that tend to limit the minorities/women from accessing leadership roles. Eventually, the psychological theories of leadership include the great man theory of leadership. The great man theory simple implies that leaders are born rather than made hence leaders destined from birth (Zigarelli, 2013). Also, the theory has it that great leaders eventually rise when faced/confronted by an appropriate condition. Besides, the trait theory of leadership which seeks to justify that leader(s) are either born or made. Per the theory, the either born or made leaders tend to possess certain specific qualities such as a sense of responsibility, intelligence, and creativity (MindTools, 2016). In addition, the transactional leadership theory, which seeks to set a balance between the leaders and their followers. Per the theory, leaders tend to either practice motivation or punish their followers to build on the mutually beneficial relationship. Notably, considering the “The role of leadership theory in raising the profile of women in management article” authored by Jogulu and Wood. The article tends to look a woman in leadership under the transaction and transformational theory and as an exclusion of the other theories. Per the article, the workplace and education are perceived as undiversified with man been preferable leaders justified by the several leadership theories that exempt the woman for leadership roles (Jogulu & Wood, 2006). In essences, the authors have it that concerning the barriers that seem to limit the minorities/woman from accessing leadership roles woman are THE CONCEPT OF LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSTITY 3 mythically unfit for holding leadership roles. This mythical unfit scenario is attributed to the unsupportive theories of leadership that are in favor of men in leadership and the mighty except the transactional theory. However, the theories implicating misconceptions that favor men in leadership roles are slowly fading away recently. THE CONCEPT OF LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSTITY References Jogulu, U. D., & Wood, G. J. This is because this theory teaches some leadership skills that help to create a positive link between the followers and the leaders. In this theory, the aspect of inspirational motivation is well depicted which is a skill that the leaders can utilize to inspire and motivate their subordinate or follower to perform at their best level. In addition, the aspect of individual consideration is also captured which teaches the leaders to understand each individual follower better. This implies that the leaders ought to comprehend the strengths and the weaknesses of their followers such that they can assign them the duties that can optimize their performance. Moreover, this theory is very significant in the study of leadership psychology since it clearly outlines the issue of idealized influence which implies that each leader should be able to persuade and influence the behavior of his/her followers. Through this, a leader would be able to align the behavior of his/her followers towards the attainment of the organizational objectives. Generally, this theory teaches leaders to be motivating, empowering and inspirational. The Transformational Leadership Theory has a significant positive impact on organizational leadership. Firstly, due to the influence that the leader has on his/her followers, the organizational performance level is likely to be high and maintained. This is because the followers would be empowered and motivated to work. Also, the adoption of this theory helps in ensuring that there are unity and a positive relationship between the leader and the followers. This creates peace and harmony in the organization. Moreover, this theory has led to the transformation of more followers into leadership in most organizations. This is because the followers emulate the leadership skills form their leaders since they perceive them as their role models. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP 3 Finally, the Transformational Leadership Theory has played a significant role in the historical timeline of leadership. This is because it indicates the origin and evolution of good leadership. Therefore, it indicates that leadership is something that started in the past and it is only going through changes due to the dynamics of the circumstances.
