The Impact of Affordable Care Act on Businesses (Walmart)
Introduction
The Affordable Care Act is the most recognizable and well-discussed hallmarks of the
President Barrack Obama Administration. The piece of legislation was enacted in 2010 and has
since been used in the provision of medical services in the country. Three primary purposes
made it necessary for the government to come up with this law. Primarily, the Affordable Care
Act intends to make medical insurance affordable hence accessible to many Americans (Haeder,
2014). While America has one of the most advanced medical services in the world, it is essential
to note that the costs are so high they prohibit a lot of people from accessing medical services.
The Affordable Care Act would cure the problem. The second intention of the Affordable Care
Act was to expand the Medicaid programs to include adults who earn below 138% of the federal
poverty levels. Poverty is one of the problems that hinder individuals from accessing quality
medical care in the country. Finally, the Affordable Care Act served to support innovative
practices in the delivery of medical services. For instance, the law was intended to boot the use
of technology in the provision of medical services. In many ways, innovation is the key to the
provision of quality services that meet the needs of the patients.
While it is evident that there are many good intentions of the Affordable Care Act, it is
notable that there are issues that have hindered the effective e execution of the plans. There have
been protecting from all quarters with regards to some of the provisions of the Affordable Care
Act. Many stakeholders have lodged lawsuits to challenge the constitutional foundations upon
which the law was enshrined. One of the issues that have been raised and which must get critical
attention is that the law would have adverse effects on both large and small business

organizations. The law contains certain provisions which will in the long run increase
companies’ spending on medical insurance cover to the employees, thus leading to an increase in
the costs of business operations (Widener, 2015).
Walmart is the biggest private business employers in the country. Today, Walmart has
over 1.6 million employees, and most of them are on permanent contracts. To satisfy the demand
of the Affordable Care Act and remain financially sound, Walmart has had to adjust its medical
insurance policies. The ramifications have been devastating. For example, the business has had
to do away with insurance policies to the employees who are working for less than 30 hours a
week. The introduction of the Affordable Care Act led to the increment in the costs of medical
insurance at Walmart, and that has had adverse impacts on the financial position of the company.
The research questions
1. What is the extent to which the Affordable Care Act impacted the insurance services that
Walmart offers to its employees?
2. What aspects of the company’s insurance services changed and to what extent did they
affect the operations of the company?
3. To what extent does the Affordable Care Act impact the financial position of Walmart?
Research methodology
A research design is an important tool in answering research questions. It describes the
operational frameworks that guide that guide the acquisition and analysis of research data. In this
study, the descriptive research design would be used in addressing the questions. In these kinds
of studies, a descriptive research design would be the most suitable since it allows for careful
observation of the interaction between the variables and determines the extent to which the

variables affect each other. Since this research reflects on the impact of the Affordable Care Act
on business organizations, will use Walmart as the population from which data will be obtained.
The basis of using Walmart is that it is the largest single private business employer in the
country. Thus, the challenges that it faces will reflect on the challenges that business entities face
in the country as a result of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The researcher
would use questionnaires that contain all the questions regarding the Affordable Care Act and
address it to the Chief Financial officer of Walmart. The questionnaires will specifically ask for
information concerning the insurance policies of the company and the manner in which the
Affordable Care Act affected the company’s financial position.
There is a procedure that applies to the collection of data. Firstly, the student will collect
a letter of intent from the university. The letter should be addressed the administration of
Walmart with information that the student intends to research the organization. The letter should
seek permission from the instituting allowing the researcher to visit their headquarters and seek
some information with regards to the manner in which the...
