6. Solve the system of equations using matrices. Use Gaussian elimination with backsubstitution.
x+y+z =
-5
x - y + 3z = -1
4x + y + z = -2
Step 1: Multiply first equation by −1 and add the result to the second equation. The result
is:
x+y+z= -5
-2y+2z=4
4x+y+z=-2
Step 2: Multiply first equation by −4 and add the result to the third equation. The result is:
x+y+z= -5
-2y+2z=4
-3y-3z=18
Step 3: Swap Row 2 and Row 3.After this step we have:
x+y+z= -5
-3y-3z=18
-2y+2z=4
Step 4: Multiply second equation by −2/3 and add the result to the third equation. The
result is:
x+y+z= -5
-3y-3z=18
-4z=8
Step 5: solve for z.
Z= -2
Step 6: solve for y.
−3y−3z=18
−3y−3⋅(−2)=18
y=−4
Step 7: solve for x by substituting y=−4 and z=−2 into the first equation.
x=1
