Please answer the Bold question:

You clearly express your preference for a more reality-based kind of “near” science fiction (at least that’s what I gather from your statement that “Land Ironclads” is good because it dealt “with future technology, which has been achieved/is achievable” and was “about something likely to become a reality in due time”).

I agree with you that Wells’ “ironclad” vehicles became a reality soon after his story was published, whereas the worlds of Frankenstein and The Island of Doctor Moreau remain far in the future (and may never be realized at all). But surely there’s more to good SF than just this. In addition to telling us “about something likely to become a reality in due time,” an SF work should also be good in other ways — ideally, it should have a compelling plot, interesting characters, etc. It’s the “science” part that makes it science fiction, but the “fiction” or literary part is important as well.

So, if we look at Frankenstein, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and “Land Ironclads” with our focus on their purely literary qualities, which do you think is best?

Frankenstein and The Island of Doctor Moreau each features a mad-scientist character who attempts to "play God" by creating new forms of life. In addition, both stories strike us as decidedly fantastic (fantastic in the sense of "remote from reality" rather than "really, really good"). Stories like "Land Ironclads," by contrast, are not fantastic at all. In fact, the central innovation in "Land Ironclads" (what today we call tanks or armored vehicles) quickly became a reality in a way that Frankenstein's monster and Moreau’s beast-men have not. Does this mean we should consider "Land Ironclads" a better work of science fiction than Frankenstein or The Island of Doctor Moreau? Why or why not? What would you say are the main criteria for judging science fiction--what, in your view, makes good SF good, and bad SF bad? The Concept of Science Fiction The film or work of art presented in novels, videos, short stories, etc. acts as a mirror to what is currently happening and deemed to happen in the future. Science fiction entails such a set of films which seek to entail people exploring several future possibilities especially concerning technology. Besides, concerning the “Land Ironclads” fiction work against The Island of Doctor Moreau or Frankenstein, “Land Ironclads” seems the better work of fiction. For “Land Ironclads” deals with future technology, which has been achieved/is achievable while The Island of Doctor Moreau or Frankenstein is termed remote reality, hence question the future technology projected by the fiction work. In essence, the following is deemed to be the main criteria for judging fiction. The novel, story, or film should be about projecting future reality which will likely happen in due time. The “Land Ironclads” science fiction work seems to have achieved this mandate given that the armed vehicle technology project by the story becomes a reality a few years later. Besides, the science fiction genre addresses extraterrestrial life, technology, time travel and space-lift rather than fantasy based on the supernatural. Hence it is about technology and advancement of science and the likely result due to such advances. Therefore, good science fiction is deemed to be constituted of technology and advanced science which projects future life. Thus science fiction should act as a mirror into the future where it projects future technology that comes to be with time. Besides, good science fiction should be formed in reality though not really in the current time rather than remote reality implied by fantasy movies. Hence the film should be about something likely to become a reality in due time especially technology which advances with time.
