Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM Department of Civil Engineering Materials 1 CIVIL 0004 Individual Assignment (Course Work Project) Date of submission - 12th May 2018 Max Marks - 100 (scale down to 25) OBJECTIVE: The fundamental objectives of this assignment is to demonstrate the student ability to 1. Demonstrate the student ability to Identify and analyse the properties of building materials used for construction of particular purpose. 2. Application / use of materials for specific purpose by understanding the properties. 3. Design a concrete mix according to standards considering the target slump and check its accuracy by experiments Outcomes (as mentioned in MIG CIVL 0004): 1. Use data on the properties of materials to calculate their performance in service using scientific principles 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the different performance measures that are used for construction materials and evaluate the materials by calculation or discussion. 3. Use computer methods and engineering principles to calculate physical properties of materials from laboratory data and present reports on them. 1 Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM TASK: General suggestions The following projects are suggested to help the student to select the topic (topic is supposed to be more specific): 1. Select any peculiar building like, Auditorium, Sports complex, Library, Residential Building, office building, Commercial Building, factory building, Masjid, school, college, etc. a. List down the different building materials used for construction of that building. b. Provide the reason for choosing that material. What other similar building material can be recommended for any particular purpose? Mention the properties which made to choose those materials. 2. Get any different kind of cement (other than OPC) conduct the following test to identify the properties of your sample and compare it with OPC  Fineness of cement  Specific gravity of selected cement  Compressive strength of cement using appropriate w/c ratio and curing after 7 days. 3. Perform Vee-Bee consistency test using different W/C ratios of 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.65 and 0.7. Discuss your result, and how the W/C ratio effect on the properties of concrete. Perform slump test for same samples and compare the results. Draw graphs of VB reading vs W/C ratio and slump vs W/C ratio 4. Find a structure / construction in Oman where supplementary materials are used (Cement replacement materials) in construction. Give details of the mix design and quantities of ingredients used per cubic meter of concrete. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using cement replacement materials in construction. Note: These are some examples, students can propose different topic and do project after module leader approval. Please give your attention to following facts while writing your report: The report is often used to present, analyze and summarize your data. You will find in the following some basic instructions on how to prepare the report: 2 Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM Report Format  The size limit: Normally, contain your report in 4-10 pages of written text plus additional pages for Figures (index).  Follow specified spacing. Generally use 1.5 x line spacing unless advised.  Start with the title page (including your name) or student number as requested.  Include your own field sketches or photographs. It is generally better to position figures within the text rather than group them at the end of the report.  Give a sequential number to all figures (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, etc.)  Add a brief, informative caption to the figures. Sections of the Report The Report should contain the following sections:  Abstract  Introduction  Your material/Methodology  Results Analysis & Application of materials  Result Discussion  Conclusions  References 1. Abstract (maximum 1/2 page) The abstract must be brief, but it has to tell the reader  What is the goal of the work (e.g. study the influence of w/c ratio on the workability of concrete) etc.  Which type of work has been carried out (e.g. lab experiments etc.)?  What are the results obtained (e.g. increasing the w/c ratio increase the workability of the mix), preferably not more than 2 sentences. 2. Introduction (maximum 2 page)  Depending on the project selected give brief history and theory on that topic.  Discuss general material classification, factors affecting the selection process.  How has the work been done (using the lab test, name your tests)  Give the general plan of the report (e.g. how do you collect your sample and what will you do to discuss these properties). 3. Material/Methodology (maximum 3 page) 3 Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM  Discuss the properties of the selected material (e.g. for auditorium material used for ceiling, walls etc)  The tests to check the properties.  The results you get and analysis for those results. 4. Results Analysis & Application of materials (maximum 4 page)  Explain how the material will effect in terms of performance.  What was the procedure to perform any test?  Procedure for mix design if any. 5. Result Discussion (maximum 1 page) Discuss the results/ data with giving your justification and it is better to be supported by previous studies. 6. Conclusions State briefly what are the major achievements of your work? 7. References Use CU Harvard referencing system as per our college rules. 8. Appendix Any additional figures, tables, and photos should be included here. DELIVERABLE: 1. A report not exceeding 10 pages. GUIDELINES: Follow the guidelines mentioned below for your assignment.  Assignment should have a Title Page. Title Page should contain the following information.  Assignment Name  MEC logo  Class  Student name  Student ID  Use page numbers  Assignment should be typed in your own words and computer typed using Times New Roman font size 12. 4 Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM  Heading should be with Font Size 14, Bold, Underline  Use Diagrams and Examples to explain your topic.  Title of figure should be below the figure and title of table should be above the table.  Copy and paste from the Internet sources is strictly not acceptable and will be treated as a plagiarism and will be dealt with as per polices given below. Rules & Regulations  If any content or diagram of the assignment is found copied from the other students then marks will be deducted from both assignments.  The purpose of assignment is to do some research work so you can consult books in Library or use internet or computer magazines or any other source. Plagiarism Policy  Plagiarised documents, in parts or whole, submitted by the students will be rejected. For the first offence of plagiarism, a student enrolled in undergraduate programme is penalised with a deduction of 25% of the marks obtained on the assessment as per the plagiarism policy statement and is allowed to re-submit the work once, within one week. The student has the right to appeal against the decision made, to the respective Programme Coordinator. Further appeal on decision taken may be made to the Head of the concerned department. If the student is not satisfied by the decisions taken by the department, s/he can appeal to the Plagiarism Appeals Committee.  For the second offence of plagiarism against the student, (committed in any semester after the semester of the student‘s first offence of plagiarism in the tenure of the student in the undergraduate programme), the student is awarded zero in the assessment where plagiarised content was found. The student is not allowed to re-submit the assessment. The student has the right to appeal against the decision made to the respective Programme Coordinator. Further appeal on decision taken may be made to the Head of the concerned department. If the student is not satisfied by the decisions taken by the department, s/he can appeal to the Plagiarism Appeals Committee.  Repeated offences of plagiarism by the student (more than two times) are dealt with as per the college policy on Academic Dishonesty as mentioned in the Student Handbook (6.2). 5 Materials 1-CIVIL 0004-A-Spring 18—CW2-PMM  All decisions on plagiarism related offences will be communicated to the student by the respective module instructors, using routine channels of communication with students, currently used by the college, preferably on the same day the charges are confirmed or the very next working day.  The student has the right to appeal against the decision informed by the module instructor to the respective Programme Coordinator. Further appeal on decision taken may be made to the Head of the concerned department.
