• YOU SHOULD COMPLETE TOPIC 1 BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS ASSIGNMENTThis assignment utilizes all the skills learned in Unit 0. In journals, you will focus on crafting a thesis statement in response to a prompt and supporting historical analysis in a one paragraph response.The format for a one paragraph response is the following:
  • First Sentence: Must be a clear and concise thesis statement
  • Next 1-2 Sentences: Introduce your first piece of evidence (historical fact) and explain how it supports your thesis
  • Next 1-2 Sentences: Introduce your second piece of evidence (historical fact) and explain how it supports your thesis
  • Next 1-2 Sentences: Introduce your third piece of evidence (historical fact) and explain how it supports your thesis
  At least ONE piece of evidence should be drawn from a primary source. Evidence drawn from TWO or more primary sources earns an excellent level of use. Don't forget to cite!Note that primary sources can be excerpted in lectures and readings, can be images from the time period in course module or textbook (if you analyze them), can be linked materials in the text, in addition to primary sources posted in the course module.

• How the Assignment is Graded

  The assignment is worth up to 50 points. The following factors are taken into account when we grade:

  RULE OF THREE THESIS - Do you have a well thought out and clear overall thesis in your introduction? Do you have a thesis statement for your paragraph? Does the paragraph organization follow the thesis statement?

  EVIDENCE - You must have solid evidence for each point you raise in the thesis. Evidence is not simply a statement, there must be an explanation of how that evidence supports the thesis statement. Example: If you were writing a paragraph on the causes of the Cold War, you might use the Baruch Plan as an example. Simply writing "the Baruch Plan was a cause of the Cold War" in your paragraph would not be enough and would not be analytical. However, the following sentences do provide a good analysis of this piece of evidence:"One cause of the Cold War was the failure of the United States and the Soviet Union to agree upon a plan for nuclear disarmament after World War II. The Baruch Plan, presented by the US, would maintain the American atomic weapon advantage for the foreseeable future. This played into Stalin's suspicions of the Americans' true motivations toward the USSR."Did you use the minimum number of primary sources? secondary sources?

  Is your argument clear and does it make sense? Is it historically accurate? Does your evidence prove your point? Does your analysis answer the prompt? Have you considered change over time and geographic differences in your essay?

  YOU ARE THE HISTORIAN!Prompt: Do you believe the New South Dream of Henry Grady and his fellow boosters was possible in the aftermath of the Civil War? Why or why not? Be sure to give plenty of specific support/examples to back up your reasoning.This is an exercise in critical thinking and a good self-assessment to see if you are "connecting the dots" and thinking historically. Answer the question in ONE well-constructed paragraph (4-5 sentences). Paragraphs should begin with a thesis statement (1st sentence). Subsequent sentences should present historical facts with your analysis (how do these facts support your thesis statement in response to the prompt). Grammar and mechanics count and don't forget to cite as necessary.
