Force Field Analysis
Force Field Analysis was founded by American psychologist Kurt Lewin as tool for
aiding decision making processes (Swanson, & Creed, 2014). Specifically, Force Field Analysis
weighs one's options on the "factors for" (driving forces) the decision to be made versus the
"factors against" (restraining forces) the decision to be made. In order for the decision to be made
the balance between the two opposing factors has to shift, hence the "factors for" has to outweigh
the "factors against" (Swanson, & Creed, 2014).
Force Field Analysis requires one to address all of the major factors that will make the
change possible. The tool helps in decision making through enabling identification of the driving
forces for making the change and also the restraining forces in making the change (Burnes &
Cooke, 2013). In a situation where change has to be made the force field analysis helps in the
individual in assessment of the possible outcomes and likelihood of the change to take place.
