Question 1
Continental margin is defined as an existing boundary between a continental-plate (comprising of
an ancient, thick and relatively low-density continental-crust with both the sedimentary and
metamorphic rocks) and an oceanic-plate (consisting of thinner, denser-oceanic crust rich in
basaltic lavas and gabbroic-plutonic rocks. Generally, we have two types of continental margins:

Passive continental margin

Active continental margin

Passive margins are also referred to as divergent margins: They occur at areas where the continent
appears rifted apart during the process of seafloor spreading. In passive margins, we have existence
of tectonically active-feature separating the two halves of each plate. A good example of passive
margins is the margin separating Americas, Europe and Africa on both parts of the Atlantic-Ocean.
The main types of passive continental margins comprise of:

Continental shelf

Continental slope

Continental rise and

The abyssal plain (floor)

Active continental margins are referred to be tectonically active. Generally, we have two endmembers of active margins:

Convergent margins and

Transform margins.

Convergent margins are experienced when both the ocean...
