Critical thinking is a process that is intellectually disciplined to actively and skillfully
conceptualize, analyze, synthesize, evaluate and apply the information gathered by observations,
experience reasoning, and communication, as a guide to belief and action. Through the use of
critical thinking, I have advanced in how I creatively think about things that I do. The
advancement has been facilitated by a number of factors that I have learned in the course of
critical thinking (Slife, et al., 2005). Being aware of the mental process has helped me advanced
in my critical thinking. Our brains are designed in a way that will use mental shortcuts to give an
explanation about what is happening around us. A critical thinker, therefore, will be aware of the
cognitive biases and personal prejudices thus make an analysis of how these aspects will affect
the objective decisions and solutions. This one way which has helped me advance in my critical
thinking (Meltzoff, 2008).
Another way is evaluating the evidence I have regarding the problem am trying to seek a
solution on. At any moment when I tried to solve some problems, I have found it important to
survey and look how other work has been done regarding the same problem. This has helped me
to think critically as the information derived needed to be critically evaluated to avoid making
the wrong decisions regarding the problem solutions (Meltzoff, 2008). For example, when you
come across a study talking about the health benefits of a sugary cereal. After reading the study
this might sound pretty convincing but it will come to your attention that the same study was
funded by the company which makes cereal production. You cannot further start making the
assumptions that will validate the study results, rather you should certainly question the people
behind the study when you have a conflicting interest (Slife, et al., 2005).
Lastly but not least, questioning basic assumptions has also helped me to advance in my
critical thinking. There has been a saying which ...
