Introduction

Euro Disneyland had been predicted to be one of the greatest theme parks in Europe and
many people looked forward to it being set up. The French government even helped them
acquire land cheaply and saw this as a major investment with the Americans. Disney themselves
looked forward to making profits of up to FF 204 million net profit. However, this was not the
case. On opening day, the park was less than half full and the number just went lower with time.
The company ended up incurring losses and debts.
According to Yu (2017), Euro Disneyland turned a blind eye to European culture and
rather than integrate both cultures to come up with a hybrid of sorts, they imposed their culture in
most situations. When drawing up the contract with the French government there were some
protests against it but they made it to ‘seduce’ members of the public and institutions into siding
with them. They, therefore, had local children attend Mickey’s birthday and had dinner and wine
with banks and other institutions. This put to rest the quells. The French government was silent
over this period since they understood the concerns the locals had but did not want to pass on
‘the deal of the century’.
This paper will take a deeper look at the initial problems that Euro Disneyland faced had
that consequently led to the losses and debts it incurred. This paper will also try to show possible
solutions and how things would have been done differently for a different outcome.
Problems that led to the downfall of Euro Disneyland
The main obstacle for Euro Disneyland was a culture in which they overlooked the
French culture and compared it to the Disney culture which was squeaky clean. According to
Disney, it was not a safe environment for children to be around alcohol. They did not allow

alcohol in the park or to be served in the park. In the French culture, every meal tastes a little
better if it is accompanied by wine. Wine is, therefore, a major part of their culture. This ban was
lifted later but by then the damage had already been done.
Disney also had a strict dressing code for all its employees (Miller, 1990). They had a
handbook and a video that encouraged all employees to come to work ‘fresh and clean’. The
handbook went beyond weight ...
