Question #1 should be one paragraphs Much has been written about the Institution of Slavery as practiced in the southern United States prior to 1865. In Supplemental Readings 13-6 and 13-7, we see two sides of the discussion. One is a condemnation of slavery by former slaves, and one is a famous defense of slavery by George Fitzhugh. Is it possible to reconcile these two very different views of slavery? Put another way, is there justification for one or both views of the institution. Questions #2 is a short essay - should be in a range of 300 to 450 words. 2) In an agricultural society, the family is a unit of production, in that each family member had a role, and the family raised, grew, or made most of what the family needed. Additional information: In these two chapters, we will look at a developing United States, although it will appear that we are looking at two nations in one. The northern United States will be a mix of farms, cities, and manufacturing based upon free labor. The southern United States will become a cotton kingdom based upon slave labor. Specifically, we will look at: ➢ Urban growth in the North ➢ Immigration in the North, primarily from the British Isles ➢ The rise of Nativism ➢ The Importance of early canals ➢ The mush greater importance of the nation’s early railroads ➢ Communication changes, including the telegraph and the rise of the city press ➢ The rise of factory-style manufacturing in the North. and the rise of the corporation ➢ The changing workforce, from farms youths to immigrants ➢ The rise of the Middle Class—and growing disparities of wealth in urban areas ➢ The rise of a Middle Class mentality and the role that the “cult of domesticity” has on family life and gender roles ➢ The prosperity of northern farms and the rise of commercial agriculture ➢ The growing importance of cotton in the southern economy, and the fact that the South will become primarily a provider of raw cotton to industrialized sectors. ➢ The southern way of life—was it genteel? ➢ Poverty in the South among white farmers ➢ Slavery as an institution: How was it perceived by slaves and slave masters ➢ The slave trade ➢ Slave resistance and insurrection ➢ The culture of slavery: What was new and what came from the African experience? ➢ The Slave family
