Tuckman, an educational psychologist, developed a description of the processes of group
dynamics that was revolutionary in 1965. It is obvious the process is not identical in many
groups owing to the different temperaments and approaches to issues. A great deal depends on
the team composition, the leadership as well as the team members' commitment to the group
goals. Tuckman developed the four steps model of group formation dynamics. The model is used
in understanding team building in organisations project teams. The process has five steps namely
forming, storming, Norming, performing and adjourning was a later addition.
Tuckman Model in Team formation and Team Dynamics
Storming
Group formation is about people coming together to achieve specific objectives. Coming
together implies that the individual team members have to give up part of their independence for
the sake of the group. At the initial stages of the group formation, two competing processes exist
side by side namely the individual perspective and the groups' perspective. There is little trust
among members. Members' of the group are not fully committed to the group. The earliest
clarity on the group's goals with strong leadership may prevent the group from collapsing. The
individual wants to fit into the group, and the group try to answer the question why are they
