Introduction
The United States is viewed as the land of milk and honey with the American dream
making it an ideal place to live in. The American dream which rewards hard-work regardless of
background, social class or circumstances of birth should ideally equal prosperity and success to
all hardworking people (King, 1961). Unfortunately, the American dream is just a set of ideals

“My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant” is the story of a young journalist who came to
America at the age of 12 via illegal means without his knowledge. Vargas explains his struggle
since he learned the truth and all the things he did to try to survive as an undocumented
immigrant. Vargas found himself as a victim since he was not aware of illegal immigration and
only learnt about it later when he tried applying for a driver’s license. However, he believed that
he could work hard and earn his citizenship which is an ideal of the American Dream. Years
later, he made a name for himself as a great journalist but the burden of his secret as an
undocumented immigrant, still weighed him down causing him to resign (Vargas, 2011).

otherwise when he learnt that his best chance at following the law would have him deported and
banned from the States for ten years. This meant that he would be taken back to a country he
barely remembered and get punished for sins he was not aware were committed. He would suffer
for sins he had not committed when trying to do the right thing.
According to The American Dream, the best way to ensure national progress is by
protecting citizens rights and therefore improving their lives. In the case of Vargas and other
immigrants like him, they do...
