On April 22, 1828, the House of Representatives in the United States passed a tariff
which later termed the Tariff of Abominations. The objective of the duty was to safeguard the
Northeast agricultural products from the competition brought about by imports. However, the
foreign goods tax would result into the increase of the cost of living in the South and cut the
industrialists profits. Despite this, the then president, John Quincy Adams, decided to assent the
bill. In response to the tariff, the then vice president John C. Calhoun wrote an Exposition
articulating the nullification doctrine questioning the constitutionality of increasing import tax
without the intention of raising revenue. This study aims to provide a conversation between three
