LDST / MGMT 330 Ethics – Crafting a Model Corporate Code of Ethics (Paper 4) Since the beginning of the course, we have been on a journey of discovery about what is meant by Business Ethics and what the leadership literature, ethics literature and the Bible have to say about Business Ethics. This process was meant to lead you to the point where you could develop your own model for making ethical business decisions. You then selected a case from our textbook to examine. Then you identified the central issue, considered the rights, standards and laws involved, considered the potential outcomes of your decision and then made a recommendation for a solution based on your own personal Ethical Decision Making Model Paper 4: Developing a Code of Ethics – A Team Approach After working to develop your own process for ethical decision-making, you will now work in teams to craft a team-based Corporate Code of Ethics. In Week 7 you’ll start the research, and in Week 8 you will present your findings. You will be divided up into project teams of three or four to develop a code of ethics for a fictitious business & then use this code as a guideline to resolve an issue. Due Saturday [as per syllabus] 11:59 PM. Each of the team cases chosen from the text should be in a corporate setting where the team’s code of ethics will need to be used to resolve the issue, similar to the ethical DM model for individuals. The case solution will be evaluated for thoroughness and for how creative and effective the recommendation is for this situation, with each team presenting their solution in class similar to the DM models. Finally, the team will predict whether their recommendation would be followed and what the likely outcome of the situation will actually be. Part of the score will include a team score for how well the team worked together. Part 3: Applying Your Model to the Evaluation of a Case Study: 3 Parts – 1. Code of Ethics – 30 points A model Code of Ethics would consist of the following: (1) guiding ethical principles and behaviors (and/or penalties for misconduct); (2) processes for avoiding and resolving ethical dilemmas, both internal and externally based; and (3) ethics training recommendations (and program effectiveness). 2. Evaluate a Case Study Using Your Code of Ethics – 50 points A. State the Business practice in question – “Is it ethical to …” • Define the issue and establish the facts B. Explain / Demonstrate Understanding of Various Dynamics: • Others’ Rights • Existing Laws / Standards • Principles (whether Biblical or Social) • Cultural Uniqueness C. Consideration of Outcomes / Impact – define what you perceive will be the impact and effects on others rights with different choices or options. D. Using Your Code of Ethics, form a pattern for making a decision. Carefully but briefly use your code of ethics to determine the course of action. Then, using a persuasive style, defend your position using Moral reasoning with consideration of the Business impact: • Economic • Legal • Social • People • (you do not have to use all of these, but they need to be understood and demonstrated) E. A Critique of Your Code of Ethics – how did it help, what might need to change? 3. Team Members’ Participation – 20 points You will evaluate each team member on their active support of this project. Your peer evaluation score will be the average rating you receive from your peers. All members should be evaluated on their total performance during the entire assignment. You will each receive a rating sheet and key areas of participation to rate each team member and yourself. You total score for this section will be the average score you receive from your teammates. TEAM PEER EVALUATION Prof. Joe Bucci Performance Appraisal is a difficult task that many managers try to avoid and that many managers do not do well. Part of your experience in this class has been designed to expose you to what it is like to work alongside of others. With this evaluation I am asking you to experience having to evaluate your peers, even if this makes you uncomfortable. You will have to do this on the job and thus it is best to gain experience at this task now. Using the scale below, assign to each member of the team the number that best describes that group member's contribution to the team project. You may also comment on the nature of each team member's contribution. Your peer evaluation score will be the average rating you receive from your peers. All members should be evaluated on their total performance during the entire assignment. You will need to rank each person in order of their contribution in your view. No two people should receive the same score. Appraise each person (including yourself) using the following scale: 5= 4= 3= 2= 1= Full Participation - Excellent, outstanding positive impact Strong Participation - Good significant positive impact Fair Selective Participation - Adequate, moderate positive impact Weak Participation - Less than fair share, less than adequate, let down the group Poor Participation – Totally or virtually absent, let down the group significantly I suggest you discuss your team's performance as a whole, as well as the peer evaluation, before submitting your individual evaluations. Your teammates deserve to hear your assessment of their performance both to reinforce what they are doing well and to point out areas where they can improve as team players. Please note that peer appraisal calls for honesty, even when it is “bad” news. It is important that you honestly assess the performance of each team member.
