(IMPORTANT)
You may want to consider the following questions/prompts while preparing for and writing Paper 1. You do not need to answer all of them (or any of them)! They are simply designed to help you generate ideas.
- What does Fitzgerald have to say about family history in his novel?
- In Moore’s world, what happens to a family who has no financial or specific family lineage history?
- What happens to Gatsby’s characters who have (at least in theory) attained the dream? What do they do with it? How do they handle it?
Remember that each word of your paper should directly answer the prompt. If each word of your paper is not doing this, you’re writing the wrong paper.
Remember to concentrate on creating independent thought from the analysis and avoid summary at all times.

The Great Gatsby is a novel published by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, and it captures the
postwar mood in the American society which was obsessed with wealth and status. This novel is
considered to be an American Classic today since many films, radio and television programs have
adapted the story. Roger & Me is a film which was directed by the starring Michael Moore in
1989. In the film, Moore portrays the regional economic impact that the actions of Roger Smith
who was the CEO of General Motors had in his small hometown of Flint, Michigan. In this paper,
we will be looking at the roles of family history, lineage and the financial circumstances of one's
birth play into a person's ability to attain the American dream in both Fitzgerald novel and Moore's
documentary.
The narrator in Fitzgerald novel is a young Yale graduate who works as a Bond Broker
known as Nick Carraway. Nick rents a house in West Egg to be close to his cousin, Daisy and he
ends up being neighbors with the enigmatic Jay Gatsby who was a self-made millionaire. Nick's
cousin Daisy was married to Tom Buchanan who lived a privileged life since he was born from a
lineage of wealth. Unlike Tom Buchanan, Gatsby had fallen in love with Daisy while he was in
the army but lacked the means to support her since he was born into a family of shiftless and
unsuccessful farm people. Due to the prevailing society which was obsessed with wealth and
status, Gatsby had to change his name at an early age so as not to be associated with poverty and
his meeting with Dan Cody enabled him to decide on the man he would want to be. By doing so,
he separated himself from his meager past by becoming Jay Gatsby ‘the entrepreneur.' Nick learns
that Gatsby had to look for money through organized crime to move closer to Daisy with the aim
of winning her back by showing her how far he has separated himself from poverty.
