Introduction
Tuberculosis has been in existence for a long time and it’s believed to affect any part of the
body. The disease is rampant in many parts of the world and results in the massive deaths of
approximately 2 million people per year. Tuberculosis is a contagious disease which can be
brought by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is active in the droplets of the patient. In fact, TB
can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians, whereas early as 2400 BC, some mummy’s spinal
column showed positive pathological signs of the disease (“History of Tuberculosis,” 2017).
Some strategies have been brought forward to end TB between 2015 and 2035, for example,
‘The End TB’ strategy which focuses on reducing the deaths of TB by 95% and reduce the cases
of TB by 90% and to see that no family is made to suffer catastrophic costs due to TB (Uplekar,
2015). Advances are being made to not only control TB but do away with it completely as a
health problem.
History of TB
Tuberculosis has been existing since time immemorial and during this times it has gained
numerous: white plague, consumption and phthisis pulmonarias (“History of Tuberculosis,”
2017). With the advancement in technology and medical equipment in screening, diagnosing and
treatment for TB, more than a third of the population is infected with the bacteria, with the
developing countries recording high cases of TB. With the increase in the number of HIV
infections, there is an upsurge of the cases of TB which stands more than 8 million worldwide a
year and more than 2 million deaths.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an organism that causes TB, existed between 15000 and
20000 years ago. The organism has been found in India, China and Egypt. Spinal tuberculosis

(Pott’s disease), was detected among the Egyptian mummies spinal column by archaeologists. In
the middle ages, there was a type of TB which was termed as scrofula, which affected majorly
cervical lymph nodes. This type was believed to be cured by England and France kings by just a
mere touching of the affected (Uplekar, 2015).
Around the 18th century, in Western Europe, TB reached its peak with high deaths as 900
per 10,000 people (“History of Tuberculosis,” 2017). This high number of deaths was
contributed by a number of factors which included: malnutrition, overcrowded hou...
