BENEFIT OF A GLUTEN FREE DIET
1. Introduction
Gluten-free diet is a concept that is mushrooming among many diet sensitive individuals
across the US. Although many individuals have just joined the hype and trend, there is need to
understand all the areas of concern in regard to gluten diets (Snyder, 2015). Although it might be
beneficial to some individuals to avoid gluten-laden diets, gluten itself is not necessarily a bad
thing for most individuals. In fact, gluten, being a protein, is essential for the growth and
development of the body. This is especially so for the minors, who still requires a lot of the
necessary proteins and starches to get energy and grow healthily as required. This essay focusses
on the unique topic – gluten diet, explicating the advantages and disadvantages related with
gluten diets. It is equally important for individuals to understand the needs of their bodies, and
possible foods that might cause problems to their bodies.
2. Definition of concepts related to the subject
Gluten refers to a specific type of protein contained in cereal grains including barley,
wheat, oats, and rye. Gluten can occur as either glutelins or prolamins types of proteins. Gluten
accounts for about 75 to 85% of proteins contained in the above named cereals, especially being
dominant in wheat (Snyder, 2015). Gluten, by virtue of being strongly contained in wheat is
available in all wheat products including wheat soups, bread, roux, sauces, salad dressings, pasta,
and baked foods. Some bears also contain gluten proteins if developed from gluten-related
products.
