Introduction
Teen suicide has been a major concern to the healthcare system in the globe. It has been
identified as the second leading cause of death to people aged between 15 and 24 years,
following closely accidents which are the leading cause of death in this population. Extensive
research has been carried out to assess the causative agents of teen suicide (American Academy
of Family Physicians, 2018). The major factors that have been identified are social,
environmental, and psychological factors. Teen suicide has highly been associated with drugs
and mental illness. The risk factor for suicide varies with age, ethnicity, and gender, stressful
events in life and family factors. More than 90% of the deaths caused by suicide are linked to
risk factors such as depression, drugs, and substance abuse. The risk factors mainly occur in
collaboration with other external factors, which overwhelm a teen to the extent of committing
suicide. This age group is excessively predisposed to mental disorders and other stressors such as
disciplinary problems, family violence, sexual orientation, sexual and physical abuse, and
bullying. It is estimated that one in every five teenagers in America contemplate about suicide,
and 8% of the age group attempts suicide. This data represents about 1 million teenagers, where
1700 teenagers die out of suicide annually (American Academy of Family Physicians, 2018).
The following paper explores the issue of teen suicide. Some of the main issues discussed in the
paper include the risk factors for teen suicide, warning suicidal signs of suicide and its
prevention. Teen suicide is highly associated with the mental disorder like depression and drugs
and substance abuse. Family members, friends, and relatives of teenagers have a great obligation
of protecting the teen from suicide.
