Description

Case Studies

Select two of the following case studies and answer the questions associated with those case studies

These are the two cases I selected:

Chapter 8:

  • Which components are critical to Mrs. Smith staying safely in her home?
  • Describe whether Mrs. Smith’s regimen might be augmented using mhealth applications.

Chapter 9:

  • Why would it be important to introduce the clinicians to standardized terminologies and involve them in discussions about electronic health records (EHRs) before contacting potential software vendors, or should you use the reverse approach?
  • What steps would you need to complete before reporting to the board of directors?

For each case study, your paper should be two to three pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. In addition to the textbook, utilize a minimum of two scholarly sources per case study to support your statements.

Telehealth

Telehealth has revolutionized healthcare through the incorporation of information
technology and telecommunications in the delivery of healthcare services. One notable
development attributable to telehealth is the elimination of the need for inpatient treatment for
patients who would otherwise have had to be confined to health facilities for the services. This
essay analyzes some specific aspects of telehealth using the case of Mrs. Smith, an 82-year-old
patient receiving treatment from home through the platform as the point of reference.
The telehealth system has different components classified under personal health devices,
aggregation and computation, and health services, all which are critical, some more than others,
to Mrs. Smith staying safely in her home. Personal health devices are arguably the most critical
components for Mrs. Smith. The three health conditions she suffers from; diabetes, hypertension,
and congestive heart failure require constant monitoring and regular medication to manage.
Consequently, for her to remain safely at her house and manage the conditions from home
without resorting to usual care for these conditions, her healthcare provider needs to employ
personal health devices.
Personal health devices track basic vital signs which in case of Mrs. Smith, based on the
conditions she suffers from, include weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, pulse, respiratory rate,
and oxygen levels in the blood. Some of the devices used in this case include the remote
monitoring device and the digital scale (Nelson & Staggers, 2014). Through home
telemonitoring, which has had a reported positive impact particularly in the management of
diabetes according to the Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Polisena et al., 2009), these
devices transmit the results to the healthcare providers. Therefore, as a component of telehealth,
the devices ensure the safety of the patient by continuously monitoring her vitals and

communicating the information to the concerned physicians who in turn maintain the patient’s
health.
The aggregation and computation manager component of telehealth enables the personal
health devices to enter the recorded health information into the patient’s, Mrs. Smith’s in this
case, electronic health records (Nelson & Staggers). Further, the manager tra...
