The Need for Immigration Reform
The United States, during the last 20 or so years, has struggled with the management of illegal
immigrants and policymaking regarding immigration itself. The importance of having effective
immigration policy is second to none in terms of the growth and stability of the economy, crime rates,
and the unification of the many communities in the United States. To say in a few words, whether the
United States seek out immigration reform to better secure our borders and ensure the well-being of
Americans will have a major impact on the future of Americans; therefore, I believe it to be important to
push and achieve that reform within the next few years.
To understand the immigration reform that Americans need to push for, they must first
understand the different types of immigration, as well as their respective benefits and downfalls. The
first type of immigration is the legal path into the United States. There are many methods and they all
center around two key points, acquiring a Green Card or a Work Visa. Using a Green Card can only be
acquired in three different situations according to the United States Citizenship Article, which includes:
the immigrant having a family member that is a citizen in the U.S. and is willing to sponsor them, having
a job skill that appeals to a U.S. based company and them willing to hire you, or through the Green Card
lottery which selects 50,000 recipients a year in countries that take part in the program
(uscitizenship.info). The temporary Work Visa is like the Green Card pathway, except that it does not
grant permanent residence in the United States. These ways of entry can take long periods of time and
Dobbs 2
is the reason why many immigrants attempt the less moral way to enter the country, and that is illegally.
There are a few common ways that people enter the country illegally, and those can include simply
crossing the border of the U.S., whether it is by walking or driving across the border, travelling by boat
over water, or flying. These tend to be the most obvious cases for illegal i mmigration, but there is
another way that immigrants can come into the U.S. legally, but stay too long which is the previously
mentioned temporary Work Visa. This method is abused by many immigrants that come here seeking a
job and eventually stay past the date in which they should travel back to their country of origin.
Now that there is an understanding of the two methods to entering the United States, the
effects of both should be discussed to determine what should be done. Legal immigration tends to h ave
a positive effect when handled well, as it generally allows for corporations and businesses to hire
employees that they would not naturally have from the U.S., allows for U.S. citizens to bring in their
respective family members from other countries, and provides a chance for those who are less fortunate
to seek that very success. Illegal Immigration, however, tends to have less positive effects on American
society. The first portion that will be discussed regarding their effects is the economy. According to the
article, “Illegal immigration from Mexico: effects on the Texas economy,” when analyzing jobs that
Americans with lower levels of education and illegal immigrants seek, there tends to be a similarity
between the occupations that are observed (Pearce). This shows that illegal immigrants will compete
with lower class Americans in the job market and this will lead to the unemployment of many of those
same Americans. The second portion that will be discussed is the increased crime rates among illegal
immigrants. According to the Judicial Watch Blog, which uses statistics from a DOJ report, “38.6% of all
federal cases (23,744) filed last year involved immigration, the DOJ report confirms. Nearly 22% (13,383)
were drug related, 19.7% (12,123) were violent crimes and 10.2% (6,300) involved white-collar offenses
that include a full range of frauds committed by business and government professionals”
Dobbs 3
(judicialwatch.org). This information shows that a large portion of crimes were committed by illegal
immigrants and, therefore, shows they have a negative effect on American society.
The negative effects of illegal immigration are why it is important for young Americans to get
involved in the push for immigration reform. If Americans allow for the same policy to remain and poor
enforcement of the law to occur, none of the issues with illegal immigration will ever be solved.
Therefore, it is important to be the catalyst for that change. This change cannot be achieved easily, as
lawmakers tend to debate whether bills will function and may never come to an agreement. Therefore,
it is important to contact your local and state government officials and tell them what you wish to see
changed in the future. Your voice can and will be acknowledged by those lawmakers if enou gh
Americans are seeing the issue at hand and pushing for change. Be the force that finally fixes the
immigration problem that the United States has never seemed to get correct.

According to ‘The Hechinger Report’ students from high- income families are eight times
more likely to get bachelor’s degrees by the time they’re 24 than those from low-income families
(Marcus 1). This is indicative of the inequality of wealth which the institution of tertiary
education reproduces and exacerbates, rather than diminishes. We live in a world that is shackled
by inequality, whether it is by race, wealth, gender or religion - education is one of the biggest
reproducers of these categorical inequalities from generation to generation. Education has the
ability to propel people up the hierarchy of social classes and thus, the barrier of cost which
prevents people from access to such opportunity is degenerative. Because of this, I believe that
undergraduate college tuition should be free for everyone to take steps towards a more equal
America and help close the gulf of inequality that burdens our nation. I believe that beginning
with these tertiary institutions will spark a change on a larger scale and been to attack the greater
issues which go beyond the classroom and education system alone.
The Campaign for Free College Tuition (CFCT) is a stakeholder in this issue and the
driving force behind the movement for free tuition in public colleges. They believe that the
“divide between family income and higher education costs have made the system unworkable”
(‘CFCT’) and that free undergraduate tuition is the solution to the problems of college

affordability, attainability and access which are burdening the working class. Their goal is to
create a public policy (‘CFCT’) to eliminate cost as a barrier to education by making
undergraduate tuition free to all incomes, genders and races. The main issue with the cost of
tuition in the current tertiary education system is that it is inclined towards the higher social
classes. The rapidly rising cost of tuition means that the privileged and wealthy can afford access
to the opportunity of education, where as those in the lower socio-economic class don’t always
have this same advantage. Going to college is an investment in your future because you are
essentially paying for the opportunity to earn money in the years to come. The structure of the
current education system works to create and enforce a vicious cycle which keeps those in the
lower classes in their places and propels the rich to further levels of wealth and status. We talk
about education being the great equalizer, but is this true if only a select group are allowed
access to it?
According to Educational Inequalities in Schools and Higher Education there is a strong
correlation between social class and the likelihood of going to university generally and to the top
universities particularly (Bhopal 1) This, is the specific inequality which organizations like
CFCT are trying to reduce, in hope of an equal future for young generations regardless of race,
class or gender. Their solution is a legislation which makes tuition free for all 4-year
undergraduate public institutions, which would remove the barrier of cost from access to
education. This ideology also works to transform the inclination in which we view education –
shifting it from being seen as a privilege to a human right. The system is fundamentally faulted
because it places education out of reach of a large majority of the population and instead of
acting to break through inequality, it condones it. This is why action must be taken to transform
[Type here]

Clark 1
our education system into a tool rather than a weapon. CFCT specifically, has formed a plan of
action where people can show support for this cause and advocate for change in our horizon.
Such efforts include a petition on their website which people can sign and show support of their
movement. Beyond this, they encourage you to open a college fund account to support those who
currently cannot afford certain privileges which you may be allowed.
In conclusion, the education is fundamentally and intrinsically structured to recreate the
inequalities that burden our society beyond the classroom. If we wish to ever experience and
equal America, we must take steps towards correcting this institution in the hope is will
subsequently evoke change within other institutions including the work place and government.
This change begins with each of us individually and the organization, CFCT, is a perfect
example of a vessel for such change. Their petition and college funds provide an opportunity for
us all to show our support of this issue and take action towards a more equal and just society.
Education is powerful: it can change lives, revolutionize our world and liberate us if we allow it
too – don’t we all deserve that?

A tattoo is a permanent pigmentation of the skin” and is applied through a needle injecting ink
into the dermis. This art form dates back to 2000 B.C.It was discovered on Egyptians and
mummies. Many people with tattoos experience euphoria when being tattooed and see the art
on their skin as a means of self expression.Tattoos have been regarded negatively in the
workplace for ages by employers. Restrictions are created in some companies to make tattoos
less visible while while working. It is common in corporate and government jobs for people to
be denied jobs for tattoos or asked to cover up their tattoos while working. Those with body
modifications are characterized as rebellious by Baby Boomers.Generation Y and Z are more
accepting of tattoos as a form of body art and self expression with 40% of people between the
age of 18 to 29 having tattoos.I believe that tattoos should be allowed in the workplace(NPR)
Research shows that employers are more likely to hire a candidate with less visible or no
tattoos. The tattoos on a candidate has no merit on their educational background. An extremely
educated and qualified employee could be overlooked because of their tattoos while an less
qualified candidate may be hired because there body is not tattooed.I don’t consider judging an
employee based on their tattoos is rational, or ethical.People are judged for tattoos in the
workforce daily research states that “86.67% [of hospitality employers think] that visible
tattoos and body piercings on an interviewee would be viewed negatively by their
Anglin 2
organization(Swanger,2006).This is contrary to the number of people actually reporting being
denied jobs due to tattoos or other forms of body modification at only 18% of people reporting
rejection from an employer because of their tattoos(Swanger,2006).The tattoos most people
wear on their bodies have a meaning signifying their religious beliefs, family members,
memories, and other aspects if their lives.I strongly believe tattoos regardless of their
placement should be accepted in the workforce.Customers and clients are not affected in any
way by the tattoos an employee has adorned on their bodies and the qualifications of a
candidate are in no way represented by their tattoos.
Furthermore,I have a tattoo on my wrist of a cross and a bible verse Philippians 4:13 .It would
be not fair if I were denied a job because of a tattoo representing my life as a Christian. The
tattoo on my skin has no connection to my educational background or ability to perform a job
and communicate effectively with other employers or customers.I would be not only upset but
disappointed in a company if I were ever denied a job for my tattoo or forced to cover up my
tattoo.I also would be heavily offended if one considered my tattoo self mutilation or had the
audacity to express negative feelings toward me or judge me wrongfully because I am a
tattooed female. This doesn’t mean that I am unaware of the fact that tattoos are not protected
under the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions nondiscriminatory employment
policies.I simply refuse to believe that there aren’t other employers in the workforce that will
see the value my educational background and characteristics matching a companies values and
hire me regardless of my tattoo.
On the other hand,Some people are completely against tattoos whether it be in the workforce
or just on ones skin for self expression,
