Í PREPARATION OUTLINE GUIDE Abdullah Alyami Professor Eric Sundell March 26, 2018 COMM131 TITLE The Origins of Alphabets Specific Purpose Statement: The essence of the alphabet in our daily lives and how everything in some form is based on knowing and understanding of the alphabet. Central Idea: To inform the audience on the evolution of the English alphabets. INTRODUCTION The invention of early alphabetic writing in ancient Egypt nearly four thousand years ago laid the foundation for the evolution of several language forms that are spoken today by different tribes in different parts of the world. Although the language English language is regarded as the most difficult to learn and gain its mastery, the origin of its alphabet is same as most of the non-complex ones. Analysis of historical records on the creation of the modern English alphabets revealed that they are the products of the efforts of the several scholars that combined the sounds and spoken forms of several languages to create them. It must be the major factors why the successful participation of members of different societies is dependent on their level of knowledge and understanding of the alphabets. Connective: Therefore, this speech would examine several aspects of the origins of alphabetic writings as a means for educating the audience on the significance of the evolution of the English language, as well as its roles in the conduct of the daily activities of human endeavors. BODY I. Alphabet is an integral part of modern Western life A. However, it was invented after the existence of the hieroglyphic pictorgraphs and cuneiform (Wilford, 1999). 1. Some symbols used in alphabetic writing are based on the ancient ideograms that is still used by the Chinese 2. The current alphabetic system of the English language originated from the Semitic form of writing B. The Semitic language contained 22 consonant letters that were used in several societies. Connective: It is this evolution of the Semitic form of writing through several cultures and languages that contributed to the complexities of the modern English alphabetic system II. Old English began with the writings of the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century AD A. The futhorc that was first used in England contained 26 characters. B. Christian missionaries introduced the Latin alphabet in seventh century AD (Melissa, 2013). 1. The alphabets of Old English contained all modern ones except J, U, and W. a. The missionaries compiled the list of Old English in 1011. b. The ampersand and other five uniquely English letters were included in the list. 2. In spite of the evolution of the alphabet system, Old English is still used today. Connective: Also, it is part of the reason why the forms of the English alphabets remained in the middle-era despite the preference for Latin or Norman. III. The middle-era was the period of alphabetic writing of English writing A. The form is a reflection of the impact of Norman rule on the language. 1. Some Old English letters were replaced by Middle English letters 2. In spite of its complexity, the modern reader can understand the use of the alphabets in words (Algeo & Butcher, 2013). B. Modern English was adopted in the mid 15th century 1. The progress in the development of the alphabets resulted in the separation of U into a vowel and V into a consonant. 2. Letters contributed to the development of many archaisms 3. Pronunciations differed from some spellings. Connective: The historical review of the origin of the English alphabets would be incomplete without a mention of the first English dictionary. CONCLUSION As a conclusion, the journey to the modern forms of the English alphabets began with the development of the Semitic writing in ancient Egypt. Although the evolution resulted in the creation of several forms of the language, the influence of several civilizations on England including the Anglo-Saxons and Romans on the alphabet systems cannot be overemphasized. It is the major reason why its use is an essential part of our daily lives. BIBLIOGRAPHY Algeo, J., & Butcher, C. A. (2013). The origins and development of the English language. Cengage Learning.
