Clothes and Gender
Introduction
Throughout the semester my understanding of the concept of clothes and gender has been
deepened. In this discussion, I will demonstrate my understanding on the topic of clothes and
gender and how I have acquired more insights and knowledge on the same. Our cultures define
the type of clothes that we put on in some way. Both men and women are socialized in certain
ways of dressing that is expected of them. Cultural beliefs, values, and norms guide us into
choosing our dress code that relates to our gender. For example, in Indonesia men are brought up
to wear a piece attire that closely relates to the western meaning of a skirt.
Both men and women are socialized to put on a sarong, which is a piece of costume
wrapped to make a tube. In most parts of West Africa, the wrapped piece of attire is worn by
both genders by tying it around the waist. Men wear at the Scottish kilt to signify the level of
masculinity and normally wear it in most social gatherings to create a cultural and social
identification.
Socialization, sex, and gender
Even though the word sex and gender are used interchangeably, they mean the same. The
meaning of gender is enshrined in our cultural and social expectations which reflect what it is to
be a male or female. Sex, on the other hand, is biological state of either being male or female.
The dress code of either gender is more than complementing to the roles that they play; it
inextricably involves power relations. Otherwise, the shift of women wearing trousers shows a
key shift of the description of feminity, though not essentially a change in the existing balance.
Characteristics that distinguish one sex from another are called secondary characteristics.

Examples include quality of voice, breast development, distribution of body and facial hair
among other features.
The manner in which a particular gender portrays itself through appearance relates to its
sex. The features that a society deems most acceptable include a person’s ideal body size, age
among other attributes. For instance, the physique of 21st century real western women was slim,
youthful, and energetic with good tonation. Design and style expect women to adhere to the
aforementioned picture. Our cultural backgrounds socialize us on different aspects of life. For
instance, Color is another characteristic that we have been accustomed to. The boy child is
socialized to have a liking of blue color, unlike the girl child whose liking is pink. These
preferences affect our choice in the color of clothes that we wear.
In choosing such colors conforms to the behavior that is considered appropriate for the
gender. A scholar by the name, Stone in 1962 proposed that clothing...
