OBJECTIVE:
This study aims to formulate the taking off building element and to prepare bill of quantities for
various elements in buildings based on SMM7. In particular it focuses on the varying role of
Quantity Surveyor in economic, financial and contractual arrangements within a construction
project.
OUTCOME:
On completion of this module the student should be able to:
Evaluate and appraise quantity surveying problems and draw conclusions.
Advise on the administrative procedures necessary for the smooth running of a
construction project including - cost estimates, elemental estimates, approximate
quantities and explore various payment procedures (interim valuation, variations and
final accounts)

TASK:
ABQ Engineering Ltd., founded in 1999 is one of the most integrated infrastructures and
construction services conglomerates in Oman. The company experience encompassing all
sectors of the Infrastructure industry specialized in construction of Villa, Apartments, low-rise
and high-rise building, school & college buildings, to real estates and townships.
You are in the part of the Quantity Surveyor team to prepare the analytical estimations
for the new awarded villa project for your company. For the new project you are required to
prepare the report covering the following aspects.
a) Proposal for case study.
b) Prepare the Take-off quantities for the new awarded villa project covering sub-structure ,
super-structure and finishes (topsoil, foundation, earthwork support, In-situ concrete,
Brickwork/Block work, d.p.c, flooring concrete, walls, roof concrete, plastering, painting,
floor finishes, skirting, consider wall thick as 200 mm) and add preliminaries, contingency,
professional fee in BOQ. Prepare the Bills of Quantities relevant to SMM7. Refer details of
room dimension in excel file.
c) Explore the problems you may face during take-off and BOQ of this villa project and give
solution to minimize the issues.
d) Suggest the cost advice and payment options for villa project.

Report Format
1) The front cover of the report should have MEC logo and no page number should
appear. It must be in printed form using the following margin spacing (see sample
title form)
Top: 1.0 inches
Left: 1.5 inches
Right: 1.0 inches
Bottom: 1.0 inches
2) The report must be in black ink and is typed written in the English language using 12
points font of “Times New Roman “, on an A4 size standard paper.
3) The spacing of the lines must be 1.5 inches, using ‘justification’ alignment for the
running text , ‘center justification’ for the chapter heading, and ‘left justification for
the section heading/sub heading if any.
4) The font used for the chapter number and title is 18 points font; for the sections is
16 points font; and 14 points for sub sections if any.

5) The page number should be in the ‘footer’ at the middle. The page number in the
‘Table of Contents’ where there is the ‘List of Tables’, ‘List of Figures’ must be in
Roman numerals, (e.g. i, ii, ii,…) and all other pages must be assigned a running
Arabic number (1,2,3,…) starting from 1.
6) Every figure and table must have a figure number in an Arabic numeral (e.g. Figure 1,
Figure 2, …. and Table 1, Table 2,…). The figure title is centered at bottom of figure.
The table name is centered at the top of the table. Appendices are not required in
this report.
7) The references must use the CU Harvard referencing format and arranged in the
order of their appearance.
Report Sections
The Report should contain a maximum of 12 pages with the following sections:
Cover Page
Table of contents
Introduction
Main body of report
Conclusions and recommendations
References / Bibliography
The report should start from the ‘cover page’ to the ‘references’ with the following sections:

Cover Page ( refer to sample copy uploaded in the moodle)

Table of contents:
‘Table of Contents’ must be in bold upper case size 16 points font in the middle of
page (centered)
‘List of Figures’, ‘List of Tables’ (if any) must be in the upper case without bold and
use Roman numerals to number the pages.
All chapter topics should be written in upper case without bold.
Subtopics written in each chapter should be numbered using Arabic numerals and
indented one tab.

Introduction (minimum one page)
The introduction sets the context for the report, the background and overview of
the report content on the estimating technique used. It summarizes briefly the outline of
the entire report and focus on the statement of its objective.

Data Results and Findings (minimum eight pages)
Describe the context of the case and as to what communication processes were made
for the case situation.
Focus on the facts and identify the problems that are demonstrated in the case.
Explain the techniques engaged.
The following are the details in writing of the body of the report:
The headings are informative and descriptive.
Prepare the Take-off quantities for the new awarded villa.
Expound or elaborate the concept by presenting sub –topics relevant to the main
topic

Conclusion (minimum one page)
Every report should include a concluding statement regarding the subject matter. State
how the estimating strategy has developed your knowledge and analytical ability. It can state
also how this experience has enhanced your estimating skills. Restate the aim of the report and
how you have achieved the results.
7.
References (minimum 8 references)
Write the list of all the sources of information you have consulted incorporated in the
report following the right format of listing them using the CU Harvard style referencing format
of listing. All references listed can come from websites, journals, reference books magazines
and etc.
GUIDELINES:
This Assessment will be marked out of 100 marks.
A student may be called for VIVA to discuss his work “if the instructor has a doubt
regarding the source of the work (outsourced)”.
Student should submit a proposal for the CW assignment on Tunitin on or before 14th
April 2018.
The maximum marks allotted for submission of proposal is 10 marks of this CW.

This assessments have a detailed marking criteria mentioned in the last page of this
document.
The CW proposal may include:
CW outputs: Short paragraph (one or two points are enough for each headings) to
summarize the expected outputs of the assignment.
(10 marks)
Aim of CW.
List the elements in Take-off.
Prepare the Bill of quantity format for different element.
List the possible issue will a QS will face.
Describe the various payments.
Time-plan (in days).
Note: Two pages are enough to write the proposal.
Rules & Regulations
If any content or diagram of the report body is found to be copied from the other
students then marks will be deducted from both reports.
The purpose of the report is to do research work so you can refer books in library or use
internet or computer magazines or any other source.
Feedback will be given in moodle one week after postdate of submission.
Plagiarism Policy
As per MEC policy, any form of violation of academic integrity will invite severe penalty.
Plagiarized documents, in part or in whole, submitted by the students will be subject to this
policy.
A. First offence of plagiarism
a. If a student is caught first time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study in any
assignment other than project work, the student will be allowed to re-submit the

assignment once, within a maximum period of one week. However, a penalty of deduction
of 25% of the marks obtained for the resubmitted work will be imposed.
b. Period of re-submission: The student will have to re-submit the work one week from the
date he or she is advised to re-submit.
c. If the re-submitted work is also detected to be plagiarized, then the work will be awarded a
zero.
d. Re-submission of the work beyond the maximum period of one week will not be accepted
and the work will be awarded a zero.
e. If the student fails the module and has a proven case of academic integrity violation in this
module , the student is required to reregister the module
f. If plagiarism is detected in Project work (Project 1, Project Planning and Project Design and
Implementation) the above clauses (a,b,c,d) do not apply and
the work will be
summarily rejected. In these cases the student will be awarded a fail (F) grade and is
required to re-register the module
B. Second offence of plagiarism
a. If any student is caught second time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study (in
a subsequent semester), the student will directly be awarded zero for the work in which
plagiarism is detected. In such cases, the student will not be allowed to re-submit the work.
b. If the student fails the module and has a proven case of academic integrity violation in this
module, the student is required to re-register the module
C. Third Offence of plagiarism
If any student is caught for the third time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study
(in a subsequent semester), the student will be penalized with a fail in the module and shall be
required to re-register the module.
D. Fourth Offence of plagiarism
If any student is caught for the fourth time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study
(in a subsequent semester), he shall be suspended from the College for a period of one
semester.

E. Fifth offence of plagiarism
If any student is caught for the fifth time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study
(in a subsequent semester), he shall be expelled from the College
Amount of similar material
The total amount of similar material in any form of student work from all sources put
together should not exceed 30% (including direct quotations).
The total amount of quoted material (direct quotations) in any form of student work
from all sources put together should not exceed 10%.
The total amount of similar material in any form of student work from a single source
should not exceed 7 percent. However, cases having a similarity of less than 7 percent in
such cases may still be investigated by the faculty depending on the seriousness of the
case.
If faculty member find enough merit in the case of a student work with a similarity (with a
single source) of more than 7 percent as not a case of plagiarism, the faculty member will
provide detailed comments/remarks to justify the case. For more details refer to the student
handbook.
Late Submission
•
The recommended practice at MEC is to set the cutoff time to 23:59 on the due date for
all assessment submissions. As per the Assessment Policy at MEC, for any late
submissions, a penalty of deduction of 5% of the marks obtained for the resubmitted
work will be imposed for each working day following the last date of submission till the
date of actual submission. Assessment documents submitted beyond a period of one
week after the last date of submission will not be accepted and will be awarded a zero
for that assessment. In cases where the submission has been delayed due to
extenuating circumstances, the student may be permitted to submit the work without
imposing the late submission policy stated above. The extended period of submission
will be one week from the original last date of submission. In such cases, the student is
expected to submit the supporting certificates on or before the original last date of

submission of the assessment and the decision of extension rests with faculty
responsible for the assessment. The late submission policy shall be applied if the
student fails to submit the work within one week of the original last date of submission.
