Creating the project charter
Taking on a managerial role and transitioning from a developer or technical task can be
challenging as it involves a change in focus. Different positions within a company require different
competencies and skill sets to meet goals and see the overall picture, (Atkinson, 2014). Possessing
technical expertise and experience is significant for a project manager as it ensures they can make
decisions that will favor the completion of the project. Nevertheless, the project manager needs to
be prepared to deal with arising challenges including scope, time and cost constraints on a regular
basis.
There are various means by which an individual can successfully transition from a technical
role to a managerial position. Training programs are an effective means of preparing an individual
for a new character. Training programs are educative and enlightening and would thus educate the
individual of the fundamentals of project management, (Atkinson, 2014). Some training programs
provide publications and entry-level exams to help new project managers understand the practices
and fundamental standards of project management. Interaction with other managers would ensure
the individual gains insight on how to deal with budgetary and time constraints as well as conflicts
among team members.
Learning to develop and maintain relationships with employers, employees and key
stakeholders would be beneficial for a new project manager. The individual can seek to build skills
such decision-making skills, communication skills and time management skills to ensure all
company resources are well utilized, and minimal waste is encountered. Improving technical
expertise is also an added value since the world experiences new technological advancements
regularly and thus gaining more knowledge would ensure the individual stays ahead of the
competition.
As a project manager, it is expected that the person develops abilities to manage large
groups of people who have different personalities and background. Often, a new manager may not
be well accepted by personnel and team members, (Atkinson, 2014). Thus, the individual can
prepare himself or herself for the task by creating teams and interacting with them to build a bond
of trust and confidence. The person can ask the team members on what their expectations of him
are. Besides, that would ensure the project manager can recognize individual strengths and
capitalize on these to benefit the firm.
Besides, the person can find a mentor who has had years of experience as a project
manager. A mentor can help navigate through this position by providing advice. The mentor can
also provide insight on what pitfalls to expect thus ensuring that the individual is well-prepared to
take such obstacles head-on.
