The ‘me too’ movement was founded in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence,
particularly women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. Their
vision is to ensure past victims of sexual harassment are at the forefront of ensuring that they
create solutions preventing future cases of sexual violence. The #metoo hashtag became popular
and the phrase was first used by activist Tarana Burke while working with young survivors of
harassment and assault. With more women coming forward against famous personalities such as
Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and Bill O’Reilly the tag could only inspire more victims to come
